‘El Tigre’ Vargas earns stripes, called up by Dbacks
Shortstop Ildemaro Vargas has made his long-awaited return to the Phoenix desert.
The Reno Aces’ parent club, the Arizona Diamondbacks, promoted Vargas to the big leagues Thursday when infielder Jake Lamb went on the disabled list. Jack Reinheimer cleared waivers and is back with Reno.
Vargas, 27, was riding a season-best 24-game hit streak, the longest in the Pacific Coast League. The switch-hitting Vargas had a 16-game hit streak earlier this season. He was batting .300 with 43 RBIs and 34 extra base-hits for the Aces.
