Carson City fireworks show back on; rescheduled for this Saturday night at Mills Park
Organizers of the July 4 fireworks show that was cancelled at the last minute by the Carson City Fire Department due to wind conditions, has been rescheduled for this Saturday, July 9, between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. wind permitting at Mills Park.
The decision was made Tuesday afternoon to hold the fireworks display Saturday because organizers want the community to celebrate Independence Day regardless and hope that people will show despite Monday's cancellation.
The last minute cancelation of the Carson City fireworks display was determined by the Carson City Fire Department at around 8:15 p.m. due to wind conditions that, at the time, were not conducive to have a safe show.
The decision was made around the time that people began to arrive at Mills Park where the fireworks were to be set off.
On Monday morning the National Weather Service in Reno had advised that breezy conditions were expected with winds out of the west southwest, 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Forecasters noted the winds would stick around through the afternoon and early evening and begin to level off and diminish around an hour after sunset, between 9 to 10 p.m.
The annual fireworks show is hosted by RSVP, also known as Nevada Rural Counties Retired & Senior Volunteer Program.
For those unfamiliar with RSVP, the organization provides well-trained volunteers that assist seniors and others in need with lifesaving services. It is a self-sponsored non-profit that has a demonstrated record of outstanding service to the elderly and other citizens in need of assistance in Nevada for nearly 50 years.
Its programs include door-to-door escorted Transportation, Good Neighbor, Companionship, Respite Care, No-Cost Legal Assistance, Farmer’s Market Coupons, Homemaker Services, Personal Emergency Response Systems, Veteran Resources, critical food and medicine delivery and more.
RSVP services help seniors to age in place, remain in their own homes for as long as possible, and avoid costly long-term institutional care.
The mission of the RSVP Independent Living programs is to help keep low-income seniors independent and in their own homes as long as possible.
Last year, 297 active RSVP volunteers in rural Nevada provided 68,113 hours of volunteer service to Nevada’s elderly population and over 40 public and non-profit community agencies. In 2021, a total of 422,650 miles were driven transporting seniors and adults with disabilities. An average of 229 hours were served per volunteer in 2021. RSVP will be celebrating its 50th anniversary of providing lifesaving services in 2023.
