Nevada job growth continues, unemployment down in Carson City, statewide

CARSON CITY — Jobs in the capital city increased by 3.3 percent over the year, while Reno continues to experience the best rate of growth at 5.8 percent, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

According to its March 2019 statewide economic report, jobs increased by 3.4 percent, the fastest pace in the nation for the 6th consecutive month. Las Vegas also experienced 2.8 percent job growth.

The report also notes that in terms of population growth, In 2018, 14 of 17 counties had population growth over the year: Clark, Washoe and Lyon counties being the fastest growing.

All three metro areas grew faster than the national rate of 1.7 percent. When compared to February, the only metropolitan area to lose jobs was Carson City with a decrease of 100 seasonally-adjusted jobs, yet the capital city is up 1,000 jobs over the year, resulting in a 3.3 percent increase, according to department's report.

The Las Vegas and Reno-Sparks areas had seasonally-adjusted increases of 1,700 jobs and 300 jobs in that period.

March’s report also shows unemployment down on a month-over-month and year-over-year basis within all the state’s metropolitan areas.

Decreases in unemployment ranged from 0.9 percent in the Reno-Sparks area to 1.4 percent in Carson City over the year, and between 0.4 percent in the Las Vegas area and 0.6 percent in both Carson City and Reno-Sparks areas on an over the month basis. Unemployment also saw decreases in all 17 counties in Nevada on a year-over-year and month-over-month basis. Decreases in the counties over the year ranged from 0.1 percent in Lincoln to 1.4 percent in Carson City.

“This report shows an improving labor market around the state, with jobs rising faster than the nation in the state’s three metropolitan areas and unemployment declining in all seventeen counties over the year. Carson City did experience a seasonally-adjusted job loss over the month, while Las Vegas had the fastest rate of growth compared to February. Furthermore, unemployment in the Reno-Sparks area reached its lowest point in the last 19 years. Across the state, the labor market continues to be tight, with low unemployment and rapidly expanding job opportunities,” said David Schmidt, Chief Economist, for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation.

Additional March 2019 Economic Report Highlights:

Job Growth in March (Seasonally-Adjusted):
— Carson City experienced a decrease of 100 jobs over the month, yet is up 1,000 jobs over the year (3.3 percent).
— Reno added 300 jobs over the month and 13,900 over the year (5.8 percent).
—Las Vegas is up 1,700 jobs over the month and is up 27,500 over the year (2.8 percent).

All 3 metro areas experienced faster employment growth than the Nation (up 1.7 percent)
Unemployment:
— Carson City MSA: 4.7 percent, down 0.6 percentage point from February, and down 1.4 percentage point from a year ago.

— Reno MSA: 3.1 percent; down 0.6 percentage point from February, down 0.9 percentage from this time last year.

— Las Vegas MSA: 3.8 percent; down 0.4 percentage point from February, and down 1.1 percentage points from a year ago.

Unemployment rates remain at or below the national rate of 3.9 percent in 10 counties, unadjusted.

Unemployment rates declined on a year-over-year basis in all 17 counties ranging from 0.1 percent in Lincoln to 1.4 percent in Carson City.

Eureka, at 2.0 percent, has the state’s lowest unemployment rate, and Lyon had the highest at 4.9 percent.

The Reno MSA’s unemployment rate has not been this low, 3.1 percent, since May of 2000.

Five counties had over the year decreases in unemployment that were equal to or greater than one percent including Carson City, Clark, Esmeralda, White Pine, and Lyon.

Health care jobs increased by 28.6 percent from 3rd quarter of 2012 to 3rd quarter of 2018; Storey County Leads the Way in terms of percent growth in employment and number of worksites.

Clark county increased by 11,337 job ads in March over the previous year, totaling 22,423 ads for the month, and Washoe increased 2,305 job ads over the same time to 5,112 job ads for March.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Two School Resource Officers are on scene investigating why the alarm went off.

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
