Carson City sees increase of 400 jobs in March, statewide figures up slightly for the month
Carson City saw a gain of 400 jobs in the month of March, according to figures released Tuesday by the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Job numbers in Carson City were expected to increase by 200, but actually realized an increase of 400 jobs. With the gain there was a seasonally adjusted increase of 200 jobs this month in the State capital, according to department figures. The job gain coincides with the downtown improvement corridor project that began in March.
Statewide however, the unemployment rates among the Silver State's metro areas increased in March relative to February, but decreased over the year. Carson City MSA rate is up 0.1 percentage point relative to last month, to 6.8 percent and declined 1.4 percentage points over-the-year.
The rate in Las Vegas rose to 6 percent, and is down 1.2 percentage points from last year. The rate in Reno/Sparks rose to 5.5 percent.
As previously reported, the statewide unemployment rate for March fell to 5.8 percent. The unemployment rate remains below 9 percent in all of Nevada’s counties,” said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Statewide, employment increased by a seasonally adjusted 6,500 in March, relative to February.
The Las Vegas area experienced a seasonally adjusted increase of 3,400 jobs in March. In Reno/Sparks, jobs increased by 2,300, leading to a seasonally adjusted increase of 2,100 jobs.
“Despite the minor upticks in the unemployment rate in the metro areas, the Silver State’s economy is still faring well,” Anderson said. “All economic indicators show positive signs despite monthly volatility in the metro area rates. It’s important to note that all of the major sectors statewide are adding jobs.”
