Topless protestors arrested at Bernie Sanders rally in Carson City
Three people are in custody Sunday afternoon following a demonstration at a Bernie Sanders rally in Carson City in which topless protestors interrupted the rally asking Sanders to stop propping up the dairy industry, according to The Nevada Independent.
According to Carson City dispatch three were detained and then taken into custody. According to a Tweet from Nevada Independent reporter Riley Snyder, the Sanders rally was interrupted by topless protestors, who asked him to stop propping up the dairy industry.
Three women were arrested for suspicion of indecent exposure, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
The activists are with the animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere, an international grassroots network of animal rights activists founded in 2013 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The group stages disruptive protests and non-violent direct action tactics to further their cause, such as open rescue of animals from factory farms.
“If Bernie truly cares about justice, he will stop propping up the dairy industry, which relies on the abuse of female cows,” said protester Priya Sawhney, in a news release.
In a followup Tweet, Snyder noted "Sanders plays it off, saying there's always a 'little excitement' in Nevada."
Snyder also noted the Sanders campaign said the rally brought 1,042 people to the Carson City event, writing that there's just under 10,000 registered Democrats in Carson City, "though many of the rally attendees are from out of the area."
