What is the metaverse? That’s the question many want to know who are not involved in the gaming world. For many, the entire concept of the internet or even how computers affect our every days lives is still a mystery although the internet has been around since 1970’s but not really used by the general public until the early 1990’s. Just 20 years later, the internet is used by over 4.5 billion and has become a part of our everyday life.
The next iteration of the internet is here and now and may take over completely within the next 20 years or less affecting everything we do from virtual 3-D shopping, to buying property, to education, to traveling. The “simple” explanation if that the metaverse is a “single, shared, immersive, persistent, 3D virtual space where humans experience life in ways they could not in the physical world.”
The young among us are already experiencing the metaverse through gaming creating virtual realities of their own. In Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg letter of October 28, 2021, he declared, “We’ll be able to feel present, like we’re right there with people, no matter how far apart we actually are. Screens just can’t convey the full range of human expression and connection. They can’t deliver that deep feeling of presence. But the next version of the internet can.”
On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the Carson City Chamber will feature Western Nevada College Professor, Computer & Information Technologies Dave Riske at a special luncheon meeting beginning at 11:30 am at the Gold Dust West to introduce explain the metaverse and how it will affect our lives. We promise it won’t be techie and will be presented in a down to earth way.
We’ll see if the metaverse will affect our reality as we converse with fellow diners while enjoying comfort food. Please RSVP to 775-882-1565 by Monday, January 16. Cost is $23 per person and includes a great lunch. Or, just go to the internet by clicking http://www.carsoncitychamber.com/spotlight/details/soups_on.
