GreenUP!, a non-profit working with businesses to reduce waste, announced that several Green Dining restaurants will host a charity drive in partnership with FISH – Friends In Service Helping, a non-profit that provides wrap-around social services to community members in need.

The charity drive will run from Dec. 15 through Dec. 25.

Starting on Thursday, Dec. 15, several Green Dining locations in downtown Carson City will host donation drop-off bins to collect food and non-food items to raise awareness on the issue of food waste and to help support FISH’s community services.

Members of the public are encouraged to embrace the season of giving by bringing their donation items to Green Dining restaurants for the charity drive.

The Green Dining Program brings restaurants together to learn about best practices to manage and reduce waste. These practices keep food from entering the landfill and inspire environmental stewardship in the restaurant community.

FISH is a non-profit organization that provides resources such as Food, Instruction, Shelter, Healthcare, and more to those in need.

Though the two organizations serve different populations, they are linked in the effort to reduce food waste.

According to federal guidelines for Food Waste Recovery, one of the best ways to keep food from entering the landfill is by donating to local food banks and shelters. Additionally, donating food supports local economies by reducing the business and environmental costs of wasted resources.

FISH receives an average of 53,000 pounds of food donated every month from local grocery stores and restaurant partners, preventing this edible food from going to the landfill.

“It’s amazing how much our community helps and supports us. We are so thankful to get as much food donated as we do to help provide food boxes to those in need as well as hot meals in our Family Dining Room,” said Gillian Murdock of FISH.

“We are organizing this community service event to support the food insecure and build awareness around the issue of wasted food," said Sierra Jickling, Green Dining Coordinator for greenUP!. "We hope community members across Carson City will join us in supporting the Green Dining charity drive by bringing their donation items with them as they go out to eat this holiday season, or by getting involved with food waste prevention in their personal lives."

greenUP! encourages all food-service providers to consider donation as a way to prevent edible foods from going to the landfill.

If restaurants or stores would like to get set up as a surplus food donor, they can register for free online at mealconnect.org or contact Gillian Murdock at 775-882-3474 x1027 or gillian@nvfish.com

FISH is also recruiting regular volunteers to help support their programs through the winter and spring season.

Anyone interested in volunteering with FISH’s food distribution services can contact Gillian Murdock: 775-882-3474 x1027 or gillian@nvfish.com

Donation drop-boxes can be found across Carson City’s Green Dining District at Arby’s, Scoups Ice Cream and Soup Bar, Great Basin Brewing Company, So Juicy, Squeeze In, and the offices at the Adams Hub for Innovation.

Look out for the Green Dining District banner over Carson Street and pay a visit to any of these Green Dining locations hosting a donation drop-off for FISH.
