Protecting Nevada's Clear Skies
The Geminids- the king of meteor showers- is soon approaching. On December 13 and 14, the sky will glow with up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour.
The Geminids is by far the best annual astronomical event. Weather-permitting, it will be a dazzling show that will renew Northern Nevadans’ appreciation for having clear skies.
Other areas in the country are not as fortunate. Because of the heavy usage of air pollutants, like coal-powered factories, their atmosphere is contaminated. This results in in a less pronounced sky of stars. They may see half of what we see here in Carson City.
The lesson to take from this is that we must ensure the protection of the skies. To later allow future generations the same opportunity for watching the Geminids, we must currently take action to preserve the air quality.
Taking the first green step in a brown environment does not need to be extreme. This could be as simple as turning off the computer at night or biking to the store.
