The Nature Conservancy statement regarding Nevada Executive Order on Climate Change
On Friday, Gov. Sisolak signed an Executive Order directing state agencies to develop and implement a robust climate strategy in Nevada. The Nature Conservancy applauds Governor Sisolak and his effort to advance comprehensive climate action in Nevada.
“I appreciate the bold leadership of Gov. Sisolak to tackle climate change,” said Juan Palma, State Director for The Nature Conservancy in Nevada. “In recent years, we have experienced the damaging effects of drought and wildfire, exacerbated by climate change, in our forests and rangelands. It is a complex problem — one that requires decisive action. It is also an incredible opportunity to advance a clean energy economy and boost the resiliency of our communities and ecosystems. Nevada is well poised to meet this challenge. The Governor’s EO provides the necessary framework and direction needed to meet the challenge this dire threat. Thank you Governor Sisolak.”
The Executive Order provides direction to state agencies to develop and implement programs that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and facilitate adaption to the effects of climate change. Notably, the Executive Order directs the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to consider natural climate solutions as part of its emissions reduction strategy.
“With nature, we have a climate solution that is available now,” said Jaina Moan, External Affairs Director for The Nature Conservancy in Nevada. “The forests, sagebrush, and desert ecosystems in Nevada are an affordable system of carbon storage, and better management solutions are available now. Nature is our greatest asset and hope.”
Natural climate solutions are conservation, restoration, and improved land management actions that increase carbon storage or avoid greenhouse gas emissions in landscapes and wetlands. Research by The Nature Conservancy and 15 other institutions shows that restoration and other land management improvements could provide more than a third of the emissions reductions needed by 2030 to limit global warming to less than 2°C.
