Capitol FFA’s Soil Judging Team Takes Root in Top Spot at Competition
Earlier this month, Carson High School’s soil judging team took first place at the statewide competition in Ely, taking them to nationals. Soil judging is a competition where teams compete to determine the quality, water retention, classification, and consistency of the soil of a 5-foot deep hole.
When asked what the competition is about, Maximillian Bushey explains, “During the evaluation, participants will determine the soil’s USDA class based on factors such as depth, texture, and permeability. We did really well on determining proper maintenance of the land.”
Because they placed first in the competition, the soil evaluation team will be able to participate in the national competition held in Oklahoma this spring.
However before they go, they will need to practice. Bushey states, “We need to work on making sure that we have the right texture and composition”
Overall, Capitol FFA’s soil judging team can not wait to attend nationals and represent Nevada.
