Nevada Women's Fund Awards FISH with Annual Community Grant
Last week, The Nevada Women's Fund (NWF) awarded FISH their Annual Community Grant of $25,000.
This grant award will be devoted to the FISH Student Housing project and help alleviate the housing costs for women living within. This way, the women can focus on their higher education without the burden of housing costs which will empower their learning potential, uplift families out of generational poverty, and strengthen the community. This is a major recognition for FISH with Nevada Women's Fund's support of this first-of-its-kind Nevada pilot program.
Since its inception in 1982, the NWF has distributed more than $9.4 million in scholarships and grants to empower achievement in women and families in Northern Nevada.
Statistically, Nevada colleges have a 55% graduation rate, making it one of the lowest graduation rates amount colleges nationwide. College dropout rates persist due to time constraints, motherhood, financial burdens, lack of access to schooling, health concerns, and family obligations.
The FISH Student Housing Program is seeking motivated individuals who are enrolled in a technical trade degree path at Western Nevada College or Truckee Meadows Community College. These individuals will have the ability to finish their schooling given at one point during their lifetime they were unable to due to life circumstances. FISH is devoted to aiding these students through their academic journey by providing housing, transportation, and wrap-around services as needed.
"We want the students to stay focused on the schooling and their family. That means we want them to feel comfortable working only part-time and will provide wrap-around services to help them do so," says FISH Client Service Director Brian Stockert.
Completion of the Student Housing apartment units will be in late October 2023 and the application process to roll out in early Fall 2023. As of now, 21 of the 36 apartments have been sponsored for furnishings (kitchen appliances, washer and dryer, AC unit, bedding, and living room furniture).
