Remarks on an otherwise unremarkable Saturday in Carson City

Yesterday my family participated in the opening ceremonies for Carson City Little League.
It was a beautiful April morning. Warm and friendly outdoors. Warm and friendly families coming out to celebrate the excitement and support and hope for the best season yet. It was… happy.
We watched the players from probably 30 teams, with boys and girls aging from 4 up to their teens, proudly run onto the field.
We watched a young musician absolutely rock out our national anthem on his electric guitar. It gave me goosebumps!
We watched parents cheer for every single player, coach, and organizer.
This is community.
This is Carson City.
And yet, our community leaders were notably absent. And I don’t say that to throw anyone “under the bus”. It was simply an observation.
My initial thought was, "Well, I guess that makes sense. It would be inappropriate to bring politics into this great Little League celebration."
But the thought stuck with me overnight.
Our leadership shouldn't be so broken – not just in Carson City, but in Nevada, and across our Country - that an elected leader's attendance at such a fantastic community celebration is thought of as somehow… inappropriate.
Leadership is sitting in the stands and cheering for Carson City families and students.
Leadership is bringing snacks to the ballgame and staying late to pick up any leftover trash.
Leadership is being here. Not just at the media-covered Road Funding Workshop attended by the other electeds on a Tuesday afternoon. But being where our community IS on a Saturday morning. Being part of our community.
Thank you to Carson City Little League organizers, coaches, families, and players, for the perfect Spring morning. You made an unremarkable Saturday, absolutely remarkable.
This is the type of community I want to live in.
This is the type of leadership I want to inspire in others.
Our future is brighter when it’s built together.

Photo is of my son, Austin, playing in his first game yesterday. He aged into the Coach Pitch league this year and he's a miraculously skilled player (I get to say that because I’m his proud mom). He certainly didn't get any athletic skill from me!
