Ward 3 Supervisor candidate to speak at Democratic luncheon
Margaret Mello, Ward 3 candidate for the Carson City Board of Supervisors, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Area residents for over 50 years, Margaret and husband Bob are well known for the many years they served the community as concrete contractors.
A native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Margaret proudly identifies as a "Yooper" (from the letters UP). She met Bob, who hails from Connecticut, when he was assigned as an aircraft mechanic to K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base near Marquette in the Upper Peninsula. After a tour servicing B-52's in Southeast Asia, Bob was discharged from the Air Force and returned to Michigan, where he and Margaret got married. They soon moved to the Tahoe area, where Bob had family connections, and before long they settled in Carson to start a family and a business.
When redistricting moved the Mello's home from Ward 4 into Ward 3 — which has an open seat on the Board of Supervisors — Margaret saw an opportunity to fulfill her long-held dream of running for office. It has always been on her bucket list, she told the Nevada Appeal, and she's not about to kick the bucket without giving it a shot. “I have a lot of inside knowledge about this town because we did construction. We were at the bottom of the stuff that was getting done,” she remarked in her usual tongue-in-cheek style.
Having a degree in accounting and decades of experience managing her company's finances and serving as treasurer for social groups, Margaret believes she could bring an accountant's eye to the Board's oversight role. She feels that the public could have better access to city financial documents, making it possible to identify opportunities for the redistribution of funds in line with shifting policy priorities.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, April 11th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Margaret will take the floor after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30.
