Slaughterhouse appeal to be heard at Feb. 3 Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting
The Slaughterhouse issue goes before the Board of Supervisors (BOS) on Thursday, February 3, at 5pm.
The “Downtown 2020 Group”, the City, and other Organizations have worked hard to improve our downtown corridor to recruit businesses, tourism and make it a gathering place for our locals.
As we all know, the demographics of Carson City has changed over the years. The area in question for the Slaughterhouse was in the rural part of town considered "residential and open space". In 1961 this area was known as Silver Terrace Acres where a large subdivision was built. The closest buildings were the historic Empire Ranch house, and the old Country Store, a mile away. It is now mixed use with businesses, residential neighborhoods, and possibly future housing developments.
Additionally, this is home to the Historic “Empire Cemetery” and the “Morgan Mill Monument”. It is directly across the Highway from Centennial Park and Ball Fields and is a recreational area with hiking trails. Can you imagine building or moving into your dream home, investing your life savings only to find out many years later there would be a Slaughterhouse in your backyard that was going to de-value your property?
Last week The Douglas County Supreme Court denied the appeal by Sinclair/ (CVM) stating that Douglas County was proper in their denial of the Centerville SUP. See link below:

They had the open space for this facility. We don’t. The facility being proposed is in a residential area, inside our City Limits. The same people proposed a facility in Placerville, California that was denied. In 2014 Yerington denied a Slaughterhouse for the second time by a different Company, as reported in the Reno Gazette Journal. Slaughterhouses are NOT popular! The Appellants and the people who support us share the same concerns as those who denied it, from the Harm to people's Property Values and quality of life, as well as the Odors, Flies, Noises, and the Health and Well-being of our Community and other negative impacts about a slaughterhouse, aka a meat packing facility. It was mentioned that this would be a closed facility in a metal building. However, that metal building would turn into an echo chamber with the noise of distressed animals traveling for miles and the howls of barking dogs.
I want to reiterate that we are not against the Slaughterhouse, we are against the location inside our City Limits surrounded by residential homes and neighborhoods. The location of this facility will drop property values. Again, would you want this in your backyard? Would you want to see your parents, grandparents, children or grandchildren affected by this. It is a principal of what is morally right for the Health and Welfare of our community. The people who support CVM can take their animals to other locations. There are other areas with a lot of land outside our City Limits. But, for many people, some who have been in this location for 27+years, they have no other options. This facility needs to be in a rural, unpopulated area. Map of the proposed area is attached the red square is the proposed Slaughterhouse.
It would be nice if all powers-to-be and our Community could come together to work on a satisfactory place for this facility; and then put it on a ballot for public approval.
What can you do? Your voice counts. Send your concerns for Public Comment to the General Board of Supervisors email: publiccomment@carson.org
All are welcome to attend this meeting on Thursday, February 3, 5pm in the Robert Crowell Board Room at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.
