Heading into Monday, the first day of July 2019 we leave an action-packed weekend behind us with a long Independence Day holiday week ahead. The activities continue, albeit at a slower place for the first day of the work week. There's art showings and activities for adults and kids, a My Place Hotels job fair, a talk featuring the program director at Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a swing dance class and more. Man running with rifle up U.S. 50 Spooner in Carson City Sheriff's Office custody

Westbound Highway 50 was closed briefly at Spooner Junction early Sunday evening after a report of a man with a rifle running on the roadway. Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol arrested the man at gunpoint and recovered a rifle.

Carson Rifle and Pistol Club Rifle Match

The Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold two rifle matches Saturday, July 6th at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The first match will be a Mini-Palma, followed by a Vintage Military Rifle match.

The Mini-Palma is a 100 yard .22 rimfire rifle match. The course of fire is 45 shots in three stages, from either prone position or bench, slow fire. Suitable for most 22 rifles, either iron-sighted or scoped. Click here for a full description of this event.

Central Lyon County called to vehicle fire that started brush, structure fire near Silver Springs

Central Lyon County Fire was called Sunday afternoon to a fire in the area of Idaho street in Silver Springs. Carson City Fire Department was asked for a mutual assist to the vehicle fire that turned into a brush and structure fire.

Speeders on Nevada law enforcement’s radar through July 14

One-third of fatal crashes nationwide involve speeding, a statistic that is prompting local law enforcement officers to crack down on aggressive drivers and speeders in Nevada. Nevada law enforcement officers are joining forces to increase high-visibility patrols now through July 14, 2019, for motorists exceeding the speed limit.

Driver dies in Sunday afternoon single vehicle rollover near Dayton

UPDATE 4:24PM: The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a fatality in the rollover that happened Sunday afternoon near Dayton. The single occupant was ejected from the vehicle and later died, according to NHP.

Lyon County and Carson City emergency crews were called Sunday afternoon to a single vehicle rollover accident on Highway 50 East near Santa Maria Ranch in the Dayton area.

Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation brings 'Yappy hour' to Genoa's Sierra Chef

Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation (WARF) is hosting a casual al fresco Yappy Hour on Tuesday, July 9, from 4-6 PM at Genoa’s Sierra Chef. The popular catering company and cooking school will be providing delicious complimentary nibbles and wine and beer will be available for purchase in keepsake WARF glasses. Canine companions are invited to attend. WARF is raising awareness about its new Animal Sanctuary under construction in Stagecoach. Yappy Hour is open to the public and admission is free.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning is helping Carson City seniors beat the heat this year with a donation of 20 brand new box fans through the KOLO 8 TV Fan Drive.

JoAnne Skelly: We have apple trees that did not have blossoms this spring

A reader sent me a question. “We had an arborist trim our apple tree in March and this is the first year in at least 20 years that the tree had no blossoms. Is this situation common or did we do something wrong?” Neither of my apple trees had flowers this year either. I had assumed a late freeze had caused this because often my trees bloom, then there is a freeze and the flowers wither and die. However, this year there weren’t any flowers at all.
