Great Basin Gem and Mineral Club

This month's meeting will be a show and tell of rocks and minerals that have been found in Nevada and in some cases purchased. Members will try to identify the rocks and also tell where they have found various rocks locally. The new board will also be introducing themselves and letting the group know what the new plans for the upcoming year are. Come share your rocks and stories, meet new people that share your interest and have some refreshments with us.

Carson City man gets maximum sentence for attempting to operate forgery lab

Gregory Alan Pugh, 52, was sentenced Tuesday in Carson City District Court for one count of attempted establishing or possessing financial forgery lab and possessing forged instruments or bills, said District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo in a news release.

Pugh received 4 years to 10 years and 15 months to 5 years respectively. The two sentences will run concurrent to each other. As a result, Pugh will spend a minimum of 4 years and up to 10 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence.

Smoke in Carson City area from Lake Tahoe prescribed fires

Prescribed fires at Lake Tahoe's east shore above Glenbrook and north shore have been blowing smoke into Carson City.
Fire and fuel crews with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the Forest Service began the controlled burns today. Winds in front of a storm system are pushing smoke into the area, confirmed Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

For 2,600 high school students, poetry is powering up Nevada

By making the words of great poets literally come to life, more than 2,600 high school students across the state are competing to represent their county at the Eighth Annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals at Reno’s Whitney Peak Hotel, formerly CommRow, Saturday March 16, noon to 3 p.m.

A program of the Nevada Arts Council, Poetry Out Loud is a distinctive national arts education event that encourages students to learn about, memorize and finally present poetry --out loud. Nevada’s 2013 theme of “Powering Up Poetry,” is a nod to NV Energy, co-sponsor of the event.

Carson City man jailed after taking his dislike for police patrol cars to another level

A 51-year-old Carson City man who made it abundantly clear he doesn't like police patrol cars parked near his home, was arrested Sunday and faces gross misdemeanor charges including assault on an officer and a blatant misuse of dialing 911.

According to the arrest report a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy responded at around 7 p.m. to the 1400 block of Stanford Drive on a larceny report. As the officer left his patrol car to retrieve a statement form, he heard someone nearby shout the following: "Get this this f****** piece of s***, f******* cop car the f*** off my property."

Tickets on sale for Proscenium Players' Steve Martin comedy 'The Underpants'

Not since Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl’s halftime show have undergarments caused such a national fuss. The Proscenium Players present Steve Martin’s “The Underpants” at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King St., Carson City.

Performance dates are Fridays, March 15, 22, and 29 and Saturday, March 16, 23 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee March 24 at 2 p.m.

Open auditions Feb. 24 for Proscenium Players' production of 'The Taming of the Shrew'

Open auditions for actors and actresses age 16 or older for Proscenium Players’ May production of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Silver State Charter School Performing Arts Center, 900 Mallory Rd., Carson City.

Performances will be at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City on May 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26.

U.S. Educator Report Card: Math F, Science F, Reading D-, Socialism A+

The 2012 education PISA* rankings indicate that the USA came in at 25th for math, 14th for reading and 17th for science out of 30 countries with only three of those countries spending slightly more money per pupil than America. Yet the mantra for more money, benefits and taxes for education continue just as it has for the last sixty years. If more money will solve the education problem then why hasn't it ever worked in the last sixty years?

Auditions for Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew'
