Carson City School District is Department of Education 'Race to the Top' finalist

The Carson City School District is a finalist for millions of dollars in federal money through the U.S. Department of Education's Race to the Top program. Grants range from $5 million to $40 million.
Superintendent Richard Stokes said he learned the district was a finalist on Monday. There were 61 applications for the money.

Volunteers Needed as Tax Preparers: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

The following is from Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: At approximately 9:08 a.m. Monday the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was informed of a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank located at the corner of Stewart and Musser Streets in downtown Carson City. The suspect was described as a white male adult, approximately 30 years old, 5 foot 6 inches tall, wearing blue jeans and a black (or dark) hoody.

Nevadans Will Pay Nearly 5 Percent More If Tax Breaks Expire

CARSON CITY – A Nevada family of four with a median income of $65,212 will see a nearly 5 percent tax hike next year if a collection of tax breaks are not renewed by Congress as it deals with the so-called “fiscal cliff”, according to a new report by the Tax Foundation.

The 4.92 percent tax increase as a percentage of the median income ranks Nevada 29th among the states in the higher rates they would pay, the study determined.
