Carson City schools show first enrollment increase in years

The district reported 7,635 students showed up for school Friday — the official count day for the state of Nevada — up 41 from last year's count.
Carter Springs Fire in Douglas County grows to 3,000 acres, 30 percent contained

A perimeter has been established, and the fire is now burning unburned fuels within the perimeter, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The fire is estimated to be 30 percent contained; with full containment expected by Sept. 25.
Highway 395 has reopened with no controls in both directions. Motorists are requested to slow down while traveling through the area, and watch for emergency vehicles accessing the area.

Fire at Elks Point Road near Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe fully contained at 2.6 acres
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 09/21/2012 - 4:25pmUPDATE 8PM: The U.S. Forest Service reports Friday night that the fire burning on the Douglas County side of Lake Tahoe on public land off of Elks Point Road has been contained at 2.6 acres. Cheva Heck, spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said local government resources assigned to the fire are being released. An engine will remain at the fire site overnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "We have no reports with lightning or problems with power lines. The fire is believed to be human caused," she said.
POW/MIA Recognition Day

Today is POW/MIA Recognition Day. On this day, we honor those who served......and those who are still serving....regardless of the conflict.
The Carson City Vietnam Memorial is located near the southeast corner of Mills Park.
