Silver Springs February Social for Families with Military Members and Veterans

Two guest speakers will be featured this month at the second Silver Springs social for families with military members and veterans.

The social will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Silver Springs Senior/Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Road in Silver Springs. The gathering is for Silver Springs and Stagecoach families of veterans, enlisted and reserve members, and for reserve, active duty, and veterans. It is open to anyone from Silver Springs and Stagecoach with a family member who is or has been in the military. Children are very welcome!

Continued support through Community Covenant for military families and veterans in Lyon and Storey counties

During the September 2010 Healthy Communities Coalition meeting, over 70 community leaders and officials from throughout Lyon County, Nevada gathered to sign a “community covenant.” The covenant promised Lyon County communities, State and local groups will work together to increase community support to the area’s military families and veterans. A number of new or expanded events and initiatives have followed that pledge.

A plea to teens and parents: Tell someone before its too late

Violence on Sunday that led to near-tragedy ended today with the arrest of a 17-year-old Carson City boy. The incident is a reminder of how fragile children can be and how early intervention can prevent something like this from happening again.

56th annual Carson Nugget Thanksgiving feeds hundreds

A first class Carson City Thanksgiving feast with all the fixins' was put on the table Thursday by the Carson Nugget, a tradition and promise it has made to the community for 56 years.

Families by the scores began entering the Carson Nugget convention center at 11 a.m. sharp for the traditional free event, which began three days in advance with food preparation. More than 1,000 guests had been anticipated to show for the annual community gathering.

The sacrifices of military families and veterans — past, present and future — are recognized and valued in Lyon County.



That message was delivered in many ways during a “Military Community Covenant” signing ceremony last week during Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s September meeting.

Community leaders from throughout Lyon County were on hand to sign a “community covenant” that promises Lyon County communities and State and local groups will work together to increase support to the area’s military families and veterans.

Community Covenant to Lyon, Nevada Area Soldiers, Veterans and Their Families

In acknowledgment of the great gift local military personnel, veterans, and military family members give, local leaders from all walks of life will sign a community covenant or contract pledging to work together toward increasing community partnerships that improve the quality of life for soldiers, veterans and their families.

In broad terms, these will include pledges to:

- Assist veterans with reintegration into our communities.

- Advocate for local, state and federal benefits for soldiers and their families.

CARSON CITY – State governments across the country are facing budget deficits and a tough economy right now, but failure to get a handle on long-term liabilities, from unfunded pensions to subsidized health care for retired workers, could jeopardize any recovery, a fiscal expert said today.

Douglas authorities seek help in locating missing 76-year-old Indian Hills woman

A 76-year-old Indian Hills woman, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, is missing and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in finding her. 
The woman, Ada Cordero, was reported missing by her daughter this Sunday afternoon and was last seen at 7:30 a.m. by her daughter, according to a press statement.
