Downtown Carson City toasts summer and August with Saturday wine walk

Visitors and residents kicked off the month of August this Saturday afternoon with a toast from more than 30 local businesses participating in the Carson City Downtown Wine Walk.

Reno’s Third Annual Hemophilia Walk & 5K Planned for September 12

For the third year in a row, Northern Nevadans will be walking or running to raise critical funds and awareness for those affected by inherited bleeding disorders during the 2015 Hemophilia Walk & 5K.

The one mile walk and 5K are scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Virginia Lake Park in Reno. Participants are strongly encouraged to register for the walk at hfnv.org and begin collecting sponsorships.

Carson City Sheriff Furlong awarded DARE, DEA America Law Enforcement Executive of Year

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong is the winner of the 2015 DEA, DARE Law Enforcement Executive of the Year, officials announced Monday.

Francisco X. Pegueros, President and CEO of DARE America and Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Los Angeles Field Division Anthony D. Williams made the announcement. The coveted award is given to a senior law enforcement officer who epitomizes an extraordinary commitment to drug prevention and enforcement.

WNC Baseball: Yankees, Brewers sign former Western Nevada College players

Two Major League Baseball franchises, including the league's most decorated team, have recently armed themselves with past Western Nevada College pitchers.

The New York Yankees, winners of 27 World Series titles, signed former Wildcat pitcher Cody Hamlin to a free-agent contract on June 23. More recently, the Milwaukee Brewers signed former WNC relief pitcher Evan Parker, and have not yet come to terms with Conor Harber, who starred for the Wildcats on the mound and in the outfield during the 2013-14 seasons.

Bikes, and cars, and brews: oh my! Downtown Carson is awash in activity on Saturday. Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly features the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, vendors, a brewfest, moustache competition and more. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.

The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Column: Details of The New Nevada Commerce Tax

Well, as Nevadans, we are collectively now stuck with a new tax. It's name? Commerce Tax. (A Clever disguise for the recently defeated Gross Margin Tax?) Up until a few days ago, it was believed that this wouldn't pass. I have yet to see any real media explanation of the details, so, after reading the text of the bill enough times (SB483), while my head is still spinning, I will attempt to give you a little more of the picture.

First Downtown Reno Lightsaber Walk

Saturday June 27th will be the first Saber Walk event in Reno. Fans of cosplay and Star Wars can bring their lightsabers out and parade through downtown Reno.

All ages are welcome and everybody is invited. So break out your Star Wars stuff and come walk downtown Reno. Meet up will be at the Reno Arch at 8:30. Walk will begin at 8:40 and finish with a group picture back under the arch. This has become a really fun event for families and kids in other cities such as Phoenix and Houston and Orlando. I'd love to see it take off here too. Completely free.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center at Lake Tahoe to host Native Species Festival

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will host the sixth annual Native Species Festival on Saturday, May 30, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89. This free family event is a great way to spend the day outdoors and learn about native species of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Win on Lewis' Walk-Off Double

Freshman outfielder Bradley Lewis delivered Western Nevada College's second walk-off victory of the 2015 season on Friday afternoon against Utah State University Eastern. Lewis stroked a walk-off double to score Jon Guzman as the Wildcats rallied for a 7-6 baseball victory over the Golden Eagles at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Bringing Awareness of Suicide Risk: WNC vets group hosts Saturday Walk With Veterans

Western Nevada College Student Veterans invite the Carson City community and college faculty and staff to take part in a Veterans Suicide Walk to honor and remember the many veterans who have suffered and/or taken their own lives.

On Friday, May 1, 10 a.m. Volunteers and student veterans will plant flags in the lawn of the Western Nevada College campus. Each flag represents a veteran who has ended their life by suicide. More than 8000 veterans lose their lives in this manner annually.

WNC Baseball: 'Relievers' Shine for Wildcats in Colorado

Nearly perfect relief pitching was the key to Western Nevada College sweeping a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Colorado Northwestern on Saturday in Rangely, Colo.
Sophomore pitcher Max Karnos tossed a one-hitter over five innings of relief as the Wildcats of Carson City won the opener, 6-1, and then Connor Zwetsch and Ty Fox allowed just one hit to the Spartans for the final 6 innings as WNC completed the sweep with a come-from-behind 7-4 victory.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats halt SWAC losing streak

Western Nevada College found the tonics Friday to end a four-game road losing: a prolific first inning and one tough out in Kody Reynolds. The Wildcats scored four times in the first en route to an 11-4 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, Colo.
