It's time to kick off this three-day weekend. Satiate your sweet tooth at the Boys and Girls Club; high school senior Larrissa Cruzan has organized a bake sale. Head downtown to check out the Grand Opening reception at Charlie B Gallery on West Telegraph. Stick around for the great band playing at Westside Pour House or have some dinner at one the nearby restaurants. Party Mardi Gras style at Remedy’s and wear something black light reactive.

Capital City Arts Initiative is proud to welcome a new exhibit to their gallery in the Carson City Courthouse. Laugh it up with Ester Steinberg at Carson Comedy in the Nugget or head to the Brewery Arts Center for an evening of Improv with special guests the Reno Improv Group.

Night in the County music festival organizers announce additional artists for 2016

Night in the Country will celebrate its 15th year as Nevada's longest-running country music festival with the largest lineup in its history, featuring some of the biggest country artists in the world including headliners Tyler Farr, Chase Rice and Kip Moore. The festival, set for July 21 – 23 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington, has also added Phil Vassar and Josh Abbott Band to the 2016 lineup.

Tickets on sale Monday for TEDx Carson City

Tickets for TEDx Carson City 2016 with the theme, Creating the Community you Want to Live In, will go on sale Monday.

Organizer Gina Hill said the goal for Carson City’s TEDx is to unite listeners in a common vision of creating a community that all would want to live in. She hopes it is transformational.

My snow dance worked! The weather should start clearing up for the next few days, so the roads should be clear. There’s no need to leave our valley though, great things are happening. The annual Share Your Christmas food drive goes on for most of the day: you don’t even need to leave your car, just drive up to the Governor’s Mansion, and someone will get your donation to the right place. Unwind, decompress and relax at a number of our great bars and restaurants.

The countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

It’s West Coast Swing night at Yaple’s Ballroom, so put on your dance shoes and kick the weekend off right.

Downtown will be the place to be tonight. Notch 8 will be making their first appearance in several months with a show at Westside Pour House. Carson Cigar is still celebrating its 20th birthday, so enjoy live music with Bread and Butter tonight. Comma Coffee will be filled with fun and laughter. The annual Tickled Pink World Dance Open Floor is including a lip sync contest for the first time, so it should be a good time had by all.

It’s fireworks Friday here in Carson City. Harley Davidson is throwing a party for Street Vibrations with live music, vendors and more. Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. Many of us will never forget where we were when we first heard about the hijacking and subsequent attacks on the World Trade Center. September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.
