Proscenium Players

Eight days before the presidential election of 1864, Nevada became the 36th state in the union. Hello Carson City and welcome to Friday, Nevada Day, Oct. 26, 2018. Today is the observed state holiday, where businesses are open but state and local government offices and schools are closed. Meanwhile, the capital city itself is getting warmed up for a three-day weekend and famed parade that celebrates statehood.

The 4th annual Rocky Horror Picture Show event is coming back to Carson City with a bang at the Brewery Arts Center on Friday, Oct. 26, beginning at 6 p.m.

Hosted by the Proscenium Players, Inc and the Brewery Arts Center, the show is all ages, free and highly entertaining.

This morning on my radio show, I discussed the topic of forgiveness. It’s a tough subject, especially if you have been hurt. However, forgiveness is not for the person or situation being forgiven. It’s for you. And, sometimes, the person or situation isn’t the only thing that needs to be forgiven. You need to forgive yourself as well.

It’s a funny thing being in the business of helping businesses through challenge. Once a client is through their challenge or transition, our work is done. Clients work with me anywhere from one month to two years. No matter how long I work with a client, there is one requirement I provide right up front. No matter what happens, keep moving.

When business owners were asked in a survey what their most precious resource was, the pre-dominant answer was (drumroll please) PEOPLE. Relationships, partnerships, and contracts with people are a businesses’ most precious asset. So, if this is the case, why do with people fall through the cracks?

Each Monday morning, I host a show called Drive Time: Your Motivational Drive in the Morning on KNVC 95.1 FM. This morning, considering President Trump’s latest tweet to the president of Iran, I found it appropriate that the topic I had prepared for today was emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence, in short, is how you manage yourself and how you interact with others.

Business is kind of like a horse race. When you line them up at the starting line, the horses all look good. They are all fast, just some are faster than others. Some of them have better odds than the others. Nevada is a betting state, so I will ask you some betting questions.

Summer vacation has arrived. All the kids are out for a few months and ready to cut loose. Check out dollar bowling days at one of Carson City’s bowling alleys. You’ll have until 10 p.m. tonight to take advantage of the special price at Carson Lanes. Get your karaoke fix at the Fox Brewpub. It’s Club Night Out for the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been dancing for years, they offer a few lessons before open dancing begins at the Eleventh Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes.

MONDAY, June 11: Things to do in Carson City

This first weekend of June packs quite a punch: activities and events abound. Head downtown for the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the season, then wander a few blocks north for Due Sorella’s Spring Vintage Market. You may as well just keep the car parked. With the monthly Wine Walk, Pour for Paws in McFadden Plaza, and Crystal’s Crusade Street Party Fundraiser on W. Telegraph, downtown is the place to be. There are so many options this weekend, so take a gander and enjoy your weekend.

It’s not just Friday, it’s the very first day of June and I love June. We are already off to a great start with the first of the Friday at Third concerts tonight in McFadden Plaza. Shane Dwight is back to perform for this free, family friendly event. The NEA sponsored Carson Big Read event comes to a close tonight with a free showing of 2010’s movie, True Grit in the Community Center Theater. Take the kids to the Children’s Museum for a special Night of Magic with Phoenix Phenomenal.

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

Laughter, romance, and a message about what it means to want to live are at the core of “The Hit,” a critically acclaimed play performed in Carson City at the Brewery Art Center's Maize Jesse Black Box Theater beginning Friday, May 25.

Don’t let the weather fool you. Once we get past the gloomy skies of today, we’re on track for a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. The inaugural Rockin’ Rib Fest at Fandango begins this afternoon and runs until Monday, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to sample some grilled bbq. The Proscenium Players begin their run of ‘The Hit’ in the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater; break a leg. Lend a hand to our various Veterans’ organizations this afternoon as they plant flags on the graves of those who served in the Lone Mountain Cemetery: many hands make light work.

I hope that everyone had a great weekend. Now it’s time to start Bike to Work Week. Set out on your commute a little earlier and do something healthy. Take some time to check out the multiple art exhibits that we have around town; Writing from Mars in the Carson City Courthouse will be gone by the end of the month. If you’d like to be more involved in our community theater activities, attend the monthly board meeting of the Proscenium Players. They always welcome an extra pair of helping hands.

Proscenium Players, Inc. will hold another workshop and this time, it’s all about light and sound! We will have two professionals in the field of performance lighting and sound to teach us all how it’s done. This will cover both the Performance Hall and the MHJ Black Box Theater on the Brewery Arts Center campus in Carson City.

A new week begins and brings us one day closer to warm weather. Karaoke night at the Fox Brewpub is an all-ages, family-friendly event, but all-day happy hour inside the Fox’ Den is meant just for the adults. Local theatre group, the Proscenium Players, have a few great productions coming these next few months; their monthly meeting is this evening at the Brewery Arts Center and anyone interested in theater or wanting to get involved is welcome to attend. Swing into the night with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club at Carson Lanes.

Do you ever wonder about that old stone house at the eastern entrance to Mills Park? Called the Wungnema House it has interesting history. Take a tour today during the monthly open house, and learn more about the early residents of Carson City. As a child of the 80s, I’m excited about this week’s Flashback Cinema feature at Galaxy Theaters. "The Dark Chrystal" was a favorite of mine. If you’ve got kids, or a pang of nostalgia, catch one of the two showings today, or again Wednesday. Read on for more of what's happening today.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before. Break a leg to the Douglas students performing in ‘Game of Tiaras’ this weekend; the show sounds hilarious, but be warned, it’s not for kids. For a family friendly outing, check out Story Time with Suzie at the Nevada Railroad Museum, or photos with the Easter Bunny at PetSmart.

While your morning commute will seem darker than usual, this evening will hold onto the sunshine longer. The first day after to work after the Daylight-Saving switch is always a little rough, so please drive carefully. Get some laughs this evening at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Local funny-lady, Kat Simmons, is hosting a showcase featuring the students of her most recent Stand Up Comedy workshop. Some of the humor may not be suitable for youngsters, so use your discretion. Get your swing on at Carson Lanes.

February is coming to a close, and we’ve got the chance at a nice weekend. Explore a new trail with Muscle Powered as they take on the Fay-Luther Trail south of Genoa. If you’re in a theater kind of mood, catch the Proscenium Players’ production of ‘Love Letters.’ See what the Nevada Artists Association has been up to during their Grand Re-opening and Winter Art Show Reception this afternoon. Read on and see what options the weekend brings.

It’s been a cold week, and today is no exception, but you can have a hot time tonight. Live music, comedy, and karaoke are just some of your nightlife options. It’s family BINGO and Chili night at Carson Middle School: get some grub, maybe win one of the great prizes, and help the CMS Band Program raise funds. Dayton has a BINGO night of its own. Head to Dayton High School to get in on the action. It’s opening night for the Proscenium Players. Their production of ‘Love Letters’ runs for one weekend only, so get your tickets early. Stay safe out there, and have a great weekend.

Thank goodness that there won’t be any school traffic on this very cold and icy morning. Presidents Day is a day off for the kids, so let them stay in their warm beds. Dollar days at the Gold Dust West and Carson Lanes Bowling Alleys can be a fun activity if you venture out. The Proscenium Players are still looking for members of their Repertory Theater troupe, so don’t miss their last audition event this evening. The Empty Bowls Project Soup Fest is a delicious part of the Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting Ceremony in December, but the planning begins now.

There is absolutely a little bit of everything this weekend. There’s somewhere to volunteer, somewhere to eat some fundraising pancakes, join in an Asian New Year Lion Dance Parade, Beer Crawl in downtown Carson City, and get your Zumba on. I think the eclectic mix of happenings is one of my favorite things about our corner of the world. Whether it’s the International Film Festival, the Vagina Monologues, or telescope viewing at the WNC Observatory: you can’t tell me there is nothing to do.

Gong hei fat choy, Carson City. Today kicks off the Asian New Year, the Year of the Dog. Explore a new culture at the International Film Festival at the Community Center. The afternoon offers independent documentaries, and this evening brings a renown Mexican Film about the life and times of iconic actor and comedian, Mario Moreno. Take a gander at the newly refreshed Carson City Library during their Grand Re-opening celebration. Start your weekend with some comedy, live music, swing dancing, or karaoke.

Proscenium Players, Inc. will be holding open auditions, beginning this Friday, Feb. 16. Auditions will be held in the 1864 Grand Ballroom at The Brewery Arts Center.

Brrrrr. That chilly winter air has finally made an appearance, so pile on the layers and stay cozy. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that some white stuff sticks to the mountains. Valentine’s Day is on Wednesday, so you’ll want to make reservations if you’re planning on dinner with your sweetheart. The Be Mine Gift and Craft Fair at the Carson Mall is a great place to find something unique for your one and only.
