I don’t know what to tell you, Carson City, the weather seems to be suffering from confusion. The second week of June shouldn’t be starting out this wet and chilly. My only consolation is that the weather app on my phone promises rising temperatures later this week. Take the kids to Carson Lanes today: it’s indoors and they’ve got one dollar game and shoe rental specials all day long. Tonight, Sassafras is proud to bring you the Hottman Sisters, a sister-led band from Omaha, Nebraska, centered around tight harmonies.

If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. It’s wine walk weekend, so downtown will be hopping with sippers, strollers, and plenty of summer fun. Keep reading, and you’re sure to find something to make this weekend special.

SATURDAY:

Hold onto those hats, Carson City, summer is off like a shot.

Proscenium Players, Inc. is holding open auditions for our next production coming this fall: Nightfall With Edgar Allan Poe by Eric Coble. The play centers around Edgar as he works his way through four of his most famous stories, all while trying to convince the audience that he’s not insane.

We’ve reached the mid-point of May, which puts summer just around the corner. I suspect there are plenty of students, and teachers too, that are counting down the days. The Carson High HOSA team is headed to their National Conference soon, and lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help get them there, just mention fundraiser to the server. We also have a T-Shirt fundraiser today at Firehouse Subs and Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, LLC. The fundraiser is for Makayla Warner who is battling a rare kidney disease.

TUESDAY:

Finally it feels like spring, and not a moment too soon. Mondays aren’t quite as bad when it’s a beautiful day. The first day of May kicks off Bike Month in Carson City. Muscle Powered has some fun rides to celebrate the annual event, including the Celebrity Bike ride tomorrow and the costumed Westside Cruise on Thursday. Go HERE for more information.

Monday strikes again, but hopefully it won’t be too painful. If you’re off work early, grab some friends and hit up Red’s Old 395 for Martini Monday. Sing Manic Monday at the Fox Brewpub’s weekly karaoke night with J and M Productions. Find something new for your child’s bookcase at the Minden Library Children’s Book Swap; it’s a great way to keep them challenged. Local theater group, the Proscenium Players, welcomes you to check out their monthly meeting. They are always looking for new talent, whether it’s on stage or behind the scenes.

MONDAY:

I’m hoping that April brings more than just showers. Not that I don’t love the spring flowers, but I’m really ready for some sunshine. Start off the month with a clean kitchen: let the Elks Club take care of breakfast. Grab your guitar, tambourine, ukulele, or vocal chords and join the A to Zen Music Jam. Head ‘North by Northwest’ at the Galaxy Theater. The classic thriller is on the big screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

SUNDAY:

It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home. The Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers want to ‘Give Our Regards to Broadway’ during their one weekend only production. There’s too much to mention in this short opening paragraph, so keep reading for all the great things our valley and sister valleys have to offer.

SATURDAY:

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. We’ve survived the freakish lamb-lion hybrid of March and we’ve survived the week, so let’s celebrate. Laugh it up with Kathleen Dunbar or Geechy Guy; Carson Comedy takes over the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall as well as their regular venue inside the Nugget. Live music, karaoke, and DJ dance parties can be found at all your favorite water holes and hot spots. Meet artist, Mike Bond, at Carson City Art Gallery at their monthly reception.

Bus Stop, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by William Inge is scheduled for one more weekend at the Brewery Arts Center’s MHJ Black Box Theater in Carson City beginning this Friday night.

The weekend always rushes by too quickly. Slow it down with Community Yoga at Comma Coffee or join Muscle Powered on their weekly bike ride. Bingo is more than just a name-o at the Carson City Senior Center. Join in the fun and help raise funds for the Meals on Wheels Program. Theater lovers won’t want to miss ‘A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’ at the CVIC Hall in Minden or ‘Bus Stop’ performed by the Proscenium Players at the Brewery Arts Center.

Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. Spring break week is winding to a close, and it’s ending on a soggy note. More of the wet stuff is on its way, but don’t let that stand in the way of a good time. Laugh it up with magician and comedian Brad Bonar Jr. at Carson Comedy in the Nugget. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players. Their spring production, ‘Bus Stop,’ opens tonight in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. The whole family is welcome at the DHS Boosters Bingo Night at Dayton High tonight; help them raise funds for this year’s Safe and Sober Grad Night.

FRIDAY:

Who has two thumbs and is ready for spring? This girl. Monday starts off with some icy roads so please give yourself some extra time to travel. It’s going to be quite a blustery day, but hopefully we’ve seen the end of the wet stuff for a little while. Start the week off with some fun. You can swing dance the night away at El Charro’s, sing the workweek blues at the Fox Brewpub’s karaoke night, or help Sassafras welcome guitarist Ian Moore to the stage.

MONDAY:

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975 will bring to Carson City Winter Wine, Spirits and All That Jazz, an evening of wine, beer and spirit tasting, featuring the very best in art, music and entertainment.

It may be a Monday, but there’s some sunshine, no rain, and Valentine’s is in the air. Treat your honey to a night on the town and an amazing performance by the Reno Philharmonic. For one night only, you’ll find the orchestra and special guest pianist, Conrad Tao, in the Bob Boldrick Theater. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint welcomes the River Arkansaw, a bluesy-Americana band from Colorado. Pick your favorite love song to sing at the Fox Brewpub’s karaoke night.

The wintery weather continues, but this next cluster of storms aren’t expected to be as bad as what we’ve already been through. Enjoy some quality time with your little one at the Carson Library: story times are at 10:30 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m.

Several people are enjoying yet another three-day weekend. This time it’s to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” One way to observe the MLK Day of Service is to participate in the Clothing and Food Drive for homeless veterans. Drop-off locations are at FISH on East Long Street and the RSVP office on Northgate. The Healthy Community Coalition’s monthly cooking class and demo features Mediterranean food and is open to all comers. You’ll find the ice rink open at 10 a.m.

This is a hard list to write when all of the area is in a state of emergency, as Governor Sandoval declared Saturday. We have not seen the worst of the flooding yet. Due to flooding, everyone is encouraged to limit their driving when possible.

Proscenium Players, Inc. (PPI) is now accepting proposals from prospective directors for productions for our 2017-2018 Season until March 1, 2017.

Enjoy a break from the wet weather today, rain is expected to return Tuesday. The Arlington Square Ice Rink is temporarily closed due to some storm damage sustained over the weekend, but the great people of the Parks and Recreation Department are working hard to have it up and running soon. Enjoy an evening with the girls at Bella Fiore tonight. A Sip and Shop event featuring local vendors begins at 5 p.m. If you’re interested in the theater, consider attending the board meeting for the Proscenium Players tonight.

In just two short weeks it will be Christmas Eve. Treat the kids to some quality time with Family Day at A to Zen or at the final performance of ‘Elf Jr. – The Musical.’ Let the Carson City Symphony get you in the spirit of the season at the 33rd Annual Holiday Treat Concert in the Community Center. Bring an unwrapped toy and you’ll get in for free to the Carson Victory Rollers’ annual ‘Season’s Beatings Red and Green Scrimmage.’ Keep reading for some great ways to spend the day.

SUNDAY:

Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. Read on for local fun for young and the young-at-heart.

The weekend is just hours away, but first let’s enjoy Friday. Join in the spirit of giving during today’s drive-by food drive. There’s a drop-off location nearby whether you’re in Carson City or Carson Valley. Wild Horse Children’s Theater heads into their second weekend of performances, so you’re running out of time to catch Elf Jr. – The Musical. Sassafras will show you a good time tonight: Whatitdo hits the stage at 8 p.m. Local favorite, Antsy McClain, brings a whole trailer park full of fun to his Christmas show at the Brewery Arts Center.

FRIDAY:

Proscenium Players, Inc. announces open auditions for their upcoming production of Bus Stop, by William Inge. Interested actors are invited to audition on December 9 or December 12 at 6:30pm or on December 11 at 2:00pm at the Brewery Arts Center in the 1864 Ballroom. Performances are slated for weekends from March 24 to April 2, 2017.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the scripts and from sides. To request sides for your audition, please email ppicarsoncity@yahoo.com. All actors selected are expected to join Proscenium Players, Inc. as members.

Would you like to direct a play or just learn the director’s art? Then come to Proscenium Players. Inc. (PPI) Introduction to Directing workshop this Saturday, December 3rd.

Our four directors are Susan Boulanger, David Hamilton, Rod Hearn and Chris Wilson. All who have several years of theater experience in all aspects of directing.

Let’s do the time warp again! This Friday night, Oct. 28 the BAC and PPI will celebrate the season with a screening of the original cult classic musical “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the BAC Performance Hall. The event begins at 8:30 p.m. with costume contests and activities and the movie will begin at 10 p.m.

“Legend tells us of an extraordinary leader who arose from the chaos to unite a troubled kingdom. A man with a vision, who gathered knights together in a Holy Quest.” You’ll find that man and quite a few others on the black box stage of the Brewery Arts Center as the Proscenium Players present ‘Spamalot.’ You’ll find great music around town: Jaime Rollins, Whiskey Lung, and Motown Music. The boys of J and M Productions bring karaoke to Whiskey Tavern. Kick up your cowboy boots with DJ Bobby Truesdale at Carson Lanes’ Country Dance Party.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.
