Region declared to be in moderate to severe drought

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno a majority of the state of Nevada especially Northern Nevada has been declared to be in a state of moderate to severe drought.

Showers and thunderstorms possible through midweek

Scattered showers and afternoon thunderstorms are possible for the Carson City region over the next several days as unsettled weather moves through the area.

The best chance of thunderstorms in the Carson City area will come Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. In the Sierra, snow showers are possible at the higher elevations Monday night.

Weather system to bring gusty winds Sunday, rain showers Monday

A cold front will move through the Sierra and Western Nevada beginning Sunday night bringing breezy conditions to Carson City and snow showers to Lake Tahoe through Monday, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

There's a slight chance of rain showers Sunday night after 11 p.m. with a stronger possibility for rain showers Monday and Monday night. Snow levels with this cold system are expected to drop to 5,100 feet, according to the weather service.

Wind and valley snow possible Sunday into early Monday with weather system

A strong cold front will move in the Sierra, Carson City and Western Nevada Sunday night bringing strong winds and the potential for snow near the valley floors, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

Ahead of the front, winds will likely become strong and gusty Sunday afternoon with gusts 45 to 55 mph and locally to 70 mph causing difficult driving conditions and possible travel restrictions for high profile vehicles along Highway 395 and Interstate 580.

Storm system could bring a few inches of snow to Carson City, a foot or more at Lake Tahoe

A developing storm system will move into the region beginning late Tuesday and drop into Western Nevada and the Sierra by early Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Reno reports. The system could bring up to a foot or more of snow to the Lake Tahoe area and a few inches to Carson City.

Winds will increase ahead of the storm system along the Sierra front late Tuesday afternoon, with gusts up to 50 mph by early Tuesday night.

Sierra snow, colder weather returns to region early next week

A change in the weather is headed for Carson City and the Sierra beginning early next week, dropping temperatures and bringing much needed snow to the Lake Tahoe region, according to the National Weather Service.

Cold weather and some snow expected for Carson City through Friday

The storm system has begun to move into the Sierra and Western Nevada, bringing gusty winds to the Carson City area. A strong cold front will move into the region ending a week of sunny skies and warm weather. The system will produce some light snow by Thursday night into Friday for the Sierra, Lake Tahoe and on to the valley floor.

Freezing fog could impact morning commute

A Freezing Fog Advisory was issued by the National Weather Service this morning for Carson City, Virginia City, Minden, Gardnerville and Reno-Sparks areas through 10 a.m.
Visibility could be down to one-quarter mile at times, and may cause icy and slick roads for this morning's commute.

Weather conference at Lake Tahoe to feature Nobel Prize team winner

Chris Field, a 2007 Nobel Prize team winner and lead author of the study on the effects of global climate change will be the keynote speaker at Lake Tahoe South's Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference, Jan 10.

Field, was the Co-Chair for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which shared the 2007 Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. He’s the director of the Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University and a 2009 Heinz Award recipient, recognizing extraordinary environmental achievement.

More snow on the way for Carson City area through Sunday

More snow is on the way for Carson City, Dayton and much of Western Nevada, prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Winter Weather Advisory through 10 a.m. Sunday.

Snow will begin tonight (Saturday) and last through Sunday morning with between 1 to 4 inches expected. Well below freezing cold air will be mixed in with the snow to make make for icy conditions along Highways 50, 395 and 95, according to the weather service.

Rain and snow mix for Carson City expected to arrive Christmas Day

It looks like Christmas Day could be a soggy one for Carson City with a mixture of rain and snow in the forecast. Rain is likely for capital city, possibly mixed with snow mainly through Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. One to 3 inches of snow is possible for the valley floor.

Snow expected to arrive in Carson City today

A snow storm blasting Lake Tahoe and the Sierra should arrive in Carson City and the valley floor this morning or sometime this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A Winter Storm Warning runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, with 4 to 8 inches of snow expected, and 6 inches to a foot in areas above 5,000 feet west of Highway 395 and the Virginia City Highlands.

"Looking at it right now, there's a better chance for snow (in Carson City) this afternoon into early evening," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Faucett.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe brace for arrival of winter storms, holiday travelers

If Mother Nature delivers temperatures and moisture levels correctly, there could very well be snow on the ground in Carson City on Christmas Day.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the region, including Carson City, where snow is expected to fly beginning Friday night and last through at least Sunday night.

Tuesday morning commute may be snowy for Carson City motorists

A drop in temperatures and a cold front pushing through the region means snow accumulations for Carson City into Tuesday morning, prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Winter Weather Advisory.

Snow will develop overnight with the heaviest expected to arrive between 4 and 8 a.m. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible in Carson City with the locally higher amounts above 5,000 feet that will likely impact the drive up Spooner Summit to Lake Tahoe.

High winds expected for Carson City and valley regions through Monday

Gusty winds should arrive in Carson City and the valleys of western Nevada Sunday night prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a High Wind Watch.

Winds will increase with a period of strong winds possible through the night and early Monday morning.

Southwest winds are expected to be 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph to 70 mph or more in the foothills and wind prone areas along Highway 395 from Carson City to Susanville and Surprise Valley, according to the weather service.

Cold weather with possibility of snow headed for Carson City

It looks like rain, some snow and cold weather is headed for Carson City and much of the valley floor, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Forecasters aren't quite sure yet which direction the storm system will take, with one scenario bringing heavy snow to the valley floor and the other scenario, very little snow. However, what the weather service is sure about is that temperatures will drop considerably by the middle of the week and into the weekend.

Fog through Carson City and northwestern Nevada could impact morning commute

Recent rainfall and clearing skies may allow areas of fog to develop across Carson City, Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service in Reno reports visibility could drop below one mile with a few areas of dense fog and visibility below 1/4 of a mile early Thursday morning. Fog will begin to burn off after 8 a.m., and may linger in a few valleys until 11 a.m.

Heavy rain and wind arrives in Carson City, knocking down trees, power poles

UPDATE 1:45PM: Eagle Valley Creek in Carson City went above its flood stage just before 1 pm this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. A flood warning remains in effect until 6:15 p.m. for urban areas and small streams in Carson City and western Douglas County.

A powerful winter storm continues to move through Carson City this morning bringing wind and rain and assorted localized power outages to the area.
Carson City remains under a Flood Warning as is much of western Nevada from Reno to Douglas County, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City and Storey County. Anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain is possible for the foothills and valley floors.
