Gusty winds to continue for Carson City through tonight

High winds continue to whip through Carson City this afternoon, with a gust reaching 53 mph recorded so far in the capital city, according to CarsonWeather.com.

A wind advisory continues through 11 tonight as southwest gusts of up to 70 mph are possible in wind prone areas and gusts between 35 to 55 mph for areas along Highway 395, Highway 50 and Interstate 80, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

With warm temperatures ahead this week, Lyon County has initiated preparations for possible flooding on the Walker and Carson rivers.

Lyon County Emergency Management recommends those with homes in low lying areas along both the Carson and Walker rivers take necessary precautions to prepare for possible moderate to major flooding in the coming weeks, according to the county's website.

Snow brings series of spinouts around Carson City

Several spinouts have been reported tonight and this morning, including a semi-truck blocking traffic near Lakeview and Highway 395 in Carson City and an injury accident reported at about 12:30 this morning in the eastbound lane of Highway 50 at Spooner.

A two-vehicle accident in the eastbound lane of Highway 50 involves a hit and run driver. Authorities are looking for a red PT Cruiser which left the scene. The extent of the injuries are unknown.

The storm looks as though it will be heaviest in areas outside of Carson City with a winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra and a high wind warning for areas east and south of Carson City, especially in Mono, Mineral and southern Lyon counties, according to CarsonWeather.com.

A winter storm will move into the Carson City, Northern Nevada and Sierra regions today with snow expected to lower along all valley floors by tonight.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a winter storm watch for Carson City and valley regions throughout Northern Nevada, with gusty winds in front of the storm of between 20 to 30 mph. The watch is expected to turn to a warning by 5 p.m. Lake Tahoe is already under a winter storm warning.

Meanwhile, a high wind warning is in effect for the Washoe Valley. Trucks, buses, trailers, and RVs are prohibited.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Snow is expected to drop to lake level by Wednesday morning.

Carson City and Sierra brace for another winter storm

A week after two storms dropped at least a foot of snow in Carson City and several feet in the Sierra, another storm will move into the area late Thursday into Friday and is expected bring between 3 to 8 inches to the capital city and several feet above Lake Tahoe.

Rain has turned to snow tonight as a strong winter storm continues to bring a mix of precipitation to the Carson City area and heavy snow at Lake Tahoe.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday morning for the Carson City region, while a winter storm warning continues at Lake Tahoe until 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Carson City and Carson Valley regions can expect about 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight, while Tahoe is expected to receive several more feet, especially in areas above 7,000 feet.

Earlier Sunday wind and rain caused a number of problems, including downed trees and minor flooding.

At 4:25 p.m., a large tree crashed into two vehicles on Nelson Lane near Bunch Way in Carson City. Tree limbs are reportedly also resting on homes, according to police dispatch. Meanwhile high winds that whipped through the area earlier this afternoon brought down another large tree in the area of Sherman Lane.

Water ponding has been reported throughout town, both the east and west sides, and around Highway 50 near the old Scolari's. Roof leaks have even been reported at the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 911 Musser Street.

Back-to-back weather systems moving into the Carson City area today has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a winter weather advisory through 3 a.m. Monday morning.

Motorists should take extra precaution tonight as rain and snow showers earlier today in Carson City have turned to ice with numerous accidents around town. As of 10 p.m. no major injuries were reported as a result of the accidents, according to dispatchers.

A third punch of snow overnight in Carson City brought a few spinouts, minor accidents, downed power lines and traffic delays this morning. In one accident, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper sustained injuries after a car lost control and slid into his parked SUV.
