Carson City and Lake Tahoe brace for arrival of winter storms, holiday travelers
If Mother Nature delivers temperatures and moisture levels correctly, there could very well be snow on the ground in Carson City on Christmas Day.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the region, including Carson City, where snow is expected to fly beginning Friday night and last through at least Sunday night.
Snow accumulations of a foot above 5,000 feet are possible with up to six inches on the valley floors. The highest accumulations at the lower elevations may occur in the foothills west of Highway 395 and in the Virginia Highlands, according to the weather service.
Meanwhile the weather service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin, with up to 5 feet of snow possible above 7,000 feet and anywhere from 1 to 3 feet at lake level. Snow is expected to arrive at Lake Tahoe Friday morning and last through Sunday night.
the storm is due to a strong low pressure system that will move into the region and remain stationary through the weekend while the jet stream will pick up deep Pacific moisture which is expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy snow, according to the weather service.
Snow and gusty winds will impact holiday travel for along highways 50 and 395, Interstate 80 and roads leading into the foothills. Winds will be out of the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph.
