A winter storm will arrive this weekend bringing strong winds followed by heavy mountain snow that may reach the lower valley floors around Carson City and Carson Valley, along with much colder temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a 70-year-old Dayton woman who died in a vehicle crash that happened Friday on Highway 395 south of Johnson Lane in Douglas County.

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held for Kerry L. May at the home of Glen and Jackie Cheney, 7548 Old Highway 395 in Washoe Valley, Nev. at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020 with a small reception to follow. He was 55 years old and was born and raised in Carson City.

Enjoy the sunny weather and a brief calm Wednesday morning through early evening before gusty winds blow into the region overnight, bringing rain and snow to the valleys and heavy snow to the Sierra by Thursday. The Human Bean coffee franchise opened their drive-thru coffee stand in Ashland, Oregon in 1998. Since then, they’ve opened nearly 100 further locations in ten states, and Carson City has now received their own.

Carson City Fire Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol were called Tuesday afternoon to a vehicle crash south of Spooner Junction on Highway 395.

As we head into the final Monday of 2019, we're looking at a slight chance of light snow in the morning as a weak weather system brushes the region. Heading into the weekend, post-Christmas holiday activities continue around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Christmas Through the Years presentation at the Carson Valley Community Theater, Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop, musicians Lauren Kepler and Dan Cypher at Bella Vita Bistro, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club and much more!

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. In December, Mondays don't really seem like Monday. At least for those of us caught up in the holiday spirit of giving and kindness. What a weekend of community fellowship this was among Carson City locals and we're just getting started, counting down the days until Christmas.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! With a weekend of Christmas holiday events across the Carson City region, it looks like Mother Nature will be active with valley rain beginning late Friday and feet of snow in the Sierra through Sunday.

The days keep moving along, ever closer to the weekend and huge helpings of Christmas holiday activities. Thursday events around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a meeting with the developer of the proposed Andersen Ranch, a presentation: "Feathers and Furs of the Carson Valley" at the River Fork Ranch, an "End to Prohibition Party" at Gather restaurant, and more.

Once again Home Instead Senior Care in Carson City asking our wonderful community to help us with gifts for our Senior's here in our community. We have Senior's in long term care facilities that have no family, and have no home to call their own.

Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present “Something Old, Something New” concerts this holiday season on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City. Admission is free, donations welcome.

More vehicle crashes on Highway 50 West at Spooner to report: Tahoe-Douglas Fire, Nevada Highway Patrol and Carson City sheriff's deputies were called to a crash late Tuesday afternoon on Highway 50 West near the top of Spooner.

UPDATE 6:58PM: NHP responded to two separate vehicle accidents in the area of Highway 395 and Stephanie Way in Douglas County early Thursday evening. No serious injuries were reported in the crashes. Northbound traffic flow has resumed.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and emergency crews from East Fork Fire and Carson City were called early Thursday evening to a traffic accident in the northbound lane of Highway 395 near Stephanie Way in Johnson Lane area of Douglas County.

It's been a mixed bag of activity so far Wednesday with valley rain, Sierra snow and power outages extending throughout Carson City into Lyon and Douglas counties.

Sure, rain and snow conditions ahead are normal by Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe area weather standards, but after several weeks of zero precipitation, bone-dry conditions and abundant sunshine, even the cynics will say any change is noteworthy.
