John Bullis: Is Your Estate Plan Obsolete?

An estate plan is not something to ignore for years. The estate plan could be getting obsolete and not reflect your current situation, goals and desires.

The only thing that is constant is change. Your estate plan may need to be adjusted for the changes. Just the passage of time will have changes in the tax law and some of the non-tax law changes by governments, regulations and court cases.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education floriculture students led by agriculture teacher, Charlie Mann, are taking orders for floral arrangements created and sold to benefit local breast cancer and domestic violence charitable organizations. Orders will be accepted through Oct. 12.

You have probably heard about the option (choice) IRA owners who are age 70-½ or older have about sending their IRA distribution (or part of it) to a charity or church. The total limit each year for the IRA distribution(s) paid directly to charities is $100,000.

Nevada moves toward shared parenting with new law

Nevada has moved from being among the worst states for shared parenting laws to being in the top third. Shared parenting is a flexible arrangement where children spend as close to equal time with each parent as possible after divorce or separation if both parents are fit. It has been shown to be highly beneficial to most children. The changes in the Nevada custody law were brought about by Nevada’s Parental Rights Protection Act of 2015.

All the other corners of Northern Nevada are a playground for the thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts here to enjoy the bike rally. Battle Born Harley on Research Way offers a huge party without ever leaving the valley. Those two events are hardly all that Carson City and our neighboring counties have to offer, however. John Bullis: Reduced medical expenses for elderly in 2017

Another “sneaky” provision of the Affordable Care Act becomes effective Jan. 1, 2017. For older folks (age 65 and older), in 2017 and later years, medical expenses will be reduced as an itemized deduction by 10 percent of Adjusted Gross Income instead of only 7-1/2 percent.

The House of Representatives recently passed and sent to the Senate a proposal to change the income tax laws for individuals. Changes for businesses is a topic for a different article.

It would change to three tax brackets of Zero-12 percent; 25 percent and 33 percent instead of the current seven brackets and some special rules.

The Hop and Mae Adams Foundation was joined by local dignitaries to break ground Wednesday on a much-anticipated, mixed-use project in Carson City’s downtown historic district.

The parcel bounded by Curry, Nevada, Telegraph and Proctor streets will soon be graced by a handsome, historically-inspired three-story complex that will include more than 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 11,000 square feet of office space and 10 upscale apartments.

Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada gives preview of new Carson City teen center

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada offered a glimpse of its new William N. Pennington Teen Center on Monday ahead of its June 23 grand opening celebration.

Funded by a $1.2 million naming gift from the William N. Pennington Foundation of Reno and donations from the community, the Club broke ground on the Carson City teen center in October 2015.

Carson City Vet Council discusses changes at meeting

Members of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC) met Wednesday afternoon to discuss changes within existing member organizations, as well as to welcome new members onto the council.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, both veterans, attended Wednesday's meeting and highlighted changes to the city's new, improved web site scheduled to go public by the end of May.
