Santa Train offers special ride for children battling cancer
The Nevada State Railroad Museum and the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, have added an additional Santa Train ride for children in our community who are battling cancer on Dec. 17 in Carson City.
Every year since 1985, the Santa train has been running at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM). The historic Virginia and Truckee No. 25 steam locomotive pulls cars filled with excited children and their families. On their way around the museum, Santa hands out candy canes to all the riders and listens to children's eager Christmas wishes.
Inside the Wabuska Depot, the sound of holiday music fills the air and parents buy raffle tickets hoping to win some great prizes donated by the community, while children write letters to Santa and others color pictures for their families.
This is a holiday tradition for many, but some families miss out on the holiday fun because their children have cancer.
But this year, there's a new addition to the Santa Train event to make it even more magical for some very special children.
This year, the NSRM, in partnership with the volunteers from the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, have a special gift for children in our community who are battling cancer.
Due to their compromised immune systems, these children and their families cannot participant in many holiday activities because they run the risk of getting sick. So to help bring some holiday cheer to these families, the NSRM has a special train just for them.
These children and their families board a special train car that has been cleaned and sanitized. After they take their seats, the No. 25 steams into action carrying her special cargo around the museum track.
Santa stops in with gifts for all the children. The gifts have been generously donated by Artsy Fartsy Gallery, Webster Wealth Management and John Hancock Investments.
As the train travels around the track these children get to excitedly enjoying the holiday season. It is a magical moment for all.
Train tickets are paid for by Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation.
The Santa Train will be running the weekends of Dec. 10-11 and Dec. 17-18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special train is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 17.
There are still seats available for children with compromised immune systems and their families. For more information and for reservations on this special train, contact the NSRM at 775-687-6953 ext. 5.
The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located at 2180 S. Carson Street in Carson City, is an agency of the State of Nevada’s Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Train rides are $5 and free for those age 3 and younger. The final ride is 3 p.m.
