The Fourth of July in Carson City is something special, full of festive cheer, fun and excitement.

From train rides to a carnival midway, Independence Day in the Nevada state capital is about more than fireworks.

Pyrotechs will be plying their craft tonight at Mills Park around 9:30 p.m. Please keep pets indoors and leave the fireworks to authorized professionals.

Carson City residents Don and Elaine Quilici returned recently from vacationing in Alaska, where they were treated to an airplane ride of a lifetime, touring Denali, the highest point in North America at 20,320 feet and then landing the tour aircraft on Ruth Glacier, which is 3,000 feet thick.

Holidays are often as fleeting as any other day, ending about as indeterminately as they had begun. On occasion, though, there is always that one day...

As usual, Mom and Dad piled their four children into the cab-over camper and drove south — all night — to Morro Bay, Calif., where my grandparents lived.

Northern Nevada's biggest blood bank has put a call out for donors, noting that it is expecting a significant shortfall of blood donations going into the July 4 holiday period.

Instead of competing in the Triple-A Home Run Derby, Kevin Cron will bring some fireworks back to Arizona.

Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury announced Wednesday that his office will not file criminal charges relating to an altercation between Douglas County Commission Chairman Barry Penzel and Commissioner John Engels earlier this year.

On Tuesday evening just after 5 p.m. a vehicle and semi-truck collision left Highway 50 momentarily grid locked near the Maverick Station.

According to Trooper Hannah DeGoey of Nevada Highway Patrol, by 5:30 p.m. roadways were clear and two people were transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

According to Carson Now reader Melinda Cash, the road was blocked by the collision but other motorists were able to go around the wreck on the dirt access roads.

I have been described as fiercely independent. For years, I have forged my own path — proudly so. I’d tap by feet along to anthems for independent women and cheer myself on. My independence became a badge of honor. And why shouldn’t it be? It was hard one. In some ways, I had to battle for it. But being solo also had a side effect, I struggled in asking for help. “I can do it” became a mantra for me. When I had a short fall, I would hide it instead of asking for support.
