Labor Day weekend at south shore Tahoe filled with activities to replace fireworks

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.
In 1998, south shore Lake Tahoe's tourism agency began doing a fireworks show designed to encourage visitors to the South Shore to stay over on Sunday night during the Labor Day weekend. With a changing school year calendar and lack of Sunday night stays, the Labor Day fireworks show was canceled.
Activities this Labor Day at south shore Lake Tahoe are many. The Heavenly Village Carnival, Art & Music Festival is the newest addition to this year’s Labor Day Weekend extravaganza. This three-day event, Sept. 1-3, centers on family friendly entertainment with a carnival, performers, car show, art show, and two live music stages. The carnival will feature rides, jugglers, stilt walkers and food. Two stages will offer performances throughout the weekend showcasing music genres from all decades. The Heavenly Village Auto Show will exhibit exotic cars including early stock cars, classics, sports cars and hot rods.
Labor Day Lasers at Lakeview is another attraction to the holiday weekend. This 30-minute spectacular light show adds a new twist to the celebration with the lake as a backdrop and a live DJ, Sept. 3 at 8:30 p.m. Wave runners will cut across the lake displaying glow sticks and lasers to pump up the crowd. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. at Lakeview Commons with local street vendors selling hand-crafted goods, live music, a beer garden and food trucks. The lase show will use the trees surrounding Lakeview Commons as a backdrop.
The Summer Luau at Beach Retreat brings Island Hawaii to Tahoe to include live music, hula and fire dancers, Friday, Sept. 1 from 6-8:30 p.m. Taste buds will be partying too with luau specialties like Lomi Lomi salmon, kahlua pig, Huli chicken, ahi poke, Hawaiian mac salad, tossed salad, haupia, pineapple upside down cake, assorted fruit, and Hawaiian sweet rolls.

Harveys Outdoor Arena is celebrating their last concert until 2018 summer with country music sensation Eric Church, Sep. 2-3. Church has been featured on the “Billboard Hot 100” 10 times the last eight years with hits “Record Year,” “Give Me Back My Hometown” and “Drink in My Hand.” Also on the card is country singer Margo Price.
The 7th annual Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association’s Rose to Toads Showcase challenges athletes to ride over 62 miles from Mount Rose to the famous Mr. Toads Wild Ride course in Meyers, Sept. 2. The route includes more than 8,000 ft. of climbing and 10,000 feet of descents.
Holidae House, an Indie Rock band from Portland, Oregon, performs at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, Sept. 2 at 9:30 p.m. The band is fresh out of the studio and their music offers an uplifting twist.
The 31st annual Heavenly Sports Labor Day Tent Sale provides skiers & riders with a chance to save big on gear for the next season at the California Main Lodge, Sept. 2-4.
