Mack the Naw: Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report for week of June 5

Hello fellow anglers. The weather is hot and the fishing action is catching up. Last week Renee and I took a few days to fish Alpine County. We camped at Indian Creek and ventured out to neighboring areas.

The action good and bad will be revealed in your local fishing report. The best fishing I have to tell you about though, was when I was not fishing at all. We came back late Saturday evening to make sure to be rested for the following day's event.

The 25th Silver Anniversary of the Lampe Park Kids Fishing day. Over the two day event there were 1,500 kids that participated this year. There were many memorable moments that Sunday. One was three year old Emma Beroni from Carson City with her 1.11 pound trout.

That is a nice trout in any one's book. The best memories were to see families enjoying the day together, sharing experiences and photos that will last a lifetime. Fishing is a sport that can be shared by both men and women. But be careful, if you show your better half how to fish too good you may end up like me. Just there to drive the boat and clean the fish. But you know what? I would not have it any other way. Let's check out our local fishing report for the week of June 5, 2014.

LAKE TAHOE:  
Mackinaw action has been rated as excellent. Gene St Denis reported he has been getting limits of 2 to 6 pounds macs with a few in the 8 to 18 pound class. Best areas have been the Tahoe City shelf or the Cal/Neva area. Anglers have been trolling flashers or dodgers with a live minnow right on the bottom in 150 to 200 feet of water.

Kokanee action has picked up a little for average sized fish 9-14 inches. Best area has been out in front of Taylor Creek. Top lining has been slow but productive. Best areas have been Cave Rock to Sand Harbor or from Taylor Creek to Emerald Bay. Most anglers have been using #8 to a #12 Rapala in a black and silver pattern. TAYLOR CREEK-UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER AND TROUT CREEK:  
Closed to fishing until July 1, 2014.

CAPLES LAKE:  
Last week the CDFG planted 60,000 fingerling trout. They also plan to stock the lake heavily with catchable rainbows over the month of June.
The lake level is only 3 feet from completely full, this is due to the  Eldorado Irrigation Districts diligence with the flow control out of the lake. The Caples Lake boat launch/marina and general store are open daily.
The Caples Lake campground is open across the street from the resort. The public boat ramp is also open for day use as well as boat launching. For more information call the Caples Lake Resort at 209-258-8888.

RED LAKE:  
Fishing has been fair for shore anglers using salmon eggs or small spinners. The mosquito's have not shown up yet this year. But they will, bring the Deet.

BLUE LAKES:  
As of last Wednesday the road was only open to the 4th gate about 7.4 miles in. That can change at any time with our recent weather.

BURNSIDE LAKE:  
The road is open and the CDFG planted the lake with rainbow trout.
I have not received any reports yet.

INDIAN CREEK RES:  
Last week I heard of one angler who caught 3  rainbows from shore while we were there. Renee and I fished various spots around the lake with only 2 bites.
The lake is starting to get a little green.
The boat launch is open and the water level has come up a few feet. When we left last Saturday there was an angler just coming in with a fully rigged Ranger bass boat, with a 115 hp out board engine. I really wanted to stick around to see him go from zero to 50 mph in 20 seconds and go from one end of the lake to the other in the same amount of time. Or he may just be using his trolling motor to get some of the largemouth bass that are in the lake.

CARSON RIVER, CALIFORNIA:  
The east fork has started to clear up a little.
Most anglers have been fishing the slack waters with salmon eggs or nightcrawlers.
Renee and I fished last Friday and we started at the Carson River Resort and worked our way up past Monitor Pass. We caught 3 nice rainbows and a few small ones. Kept a couple and released the rest.  
The west fork is running much clearer from Hope Valley down through Woodfords Canyon.
Most anglers have been using small silver Panther Martin spinners or nightcrawlers. Best action has been at Crystal Springs just up from Woodfords.
The CDFG is scheduled to plant next week.
The Carson River Resort is open for tent and RV camping and they also have cabin rentals with a general store. For more information call 530-694-2229.
Call ahead to make reservations as this time of year they get booked up very fast.

TOPAZ LAKE:
The lake is almost at it's all time low. The Douglas County Park launch and the Topaz Marina is and will be closed for the summer. Some anglers have been launching small boats from shore on the north end. Be prepared to get wet, as that part of the lake is very shallow and you will have to back out a fair distance.

FREE FISHING DAYS THIS YEAR:  
California is July 5th and September 6th.  
Nevada is June 14th. Also this year Nevada will be celebrating " Discover Nevada Parks". On June 14th all Nevada State parks will have free admission.

Caples Lake-Burnside Lake- Mosquito Lake, upper and lower.

Remember that campfires are only allowed in designated campgrounds. Even there do use caution and just plain smarts. We saw one camper last week at Indian Creek that had to be using gasoline or some type of propellant. There is no reason to have a six foot campfire.
