NDOT celebrates bike month, encourages activities, safety and social distancing
The Nevada Department of Transportation continues to encourage safe, socially-distanced outdoor exercise to support both physical and mental health.
Supported by the League of American Bicyclists and National Center for Safe Routes to School, May is traditionally celebrated as National Bike Month and includes Bike to School Day.
While large public bicycle events can’t be held this year, NDOT encourages Nevadans to safely take part in socially-distanced family bicycle activities during the week of May 4 and throughout the year.
Nevadans are encouraged to take part in the following activities to stay active and socially distanced. Those taking part are encouraged to share photos using the social media hashtag #WalkandRollNV.
Monday, May 4: Decorate your driveway/sidewalk for bike month – draw temporary chalk pictures of bicycles or safety/encouragement messages on your driveway and/or sidewalk to share with neighbors.
Tuesday, May 5: Safety videos – NDOT will post videos on how to fit your bicycle helmet, ABC pre-ride quick checks and how to cross in a crosswalk.
Wednesday, May 6: “Walk and Roll Wednesday” – Get out and “roll”! What would normally be Bike to School Day has been changed to “bike to anywhere.” Families are invited to spend at least 20 minutes outside every Wednesday, bicycling or other outdoor activity. Families are reminded to practice social distancing of at least six feet from other members of the public and wash hands immediately upon returning home.
Thursday, May 7: Poster/picture/video contest with kids – families can post a bicycle safety photo, poster or video message to @nevadadot, tagged @WalkandRollNV
Friday, May 8: NDOT will answer any questions about bicycle safety on @nevadadot social media platforms
“Small Business” Saturday, May 9: Ride to your favorite local small business and take a picture in front of it, tagging the business and @nevadadot

Inspiration from The League of American Bicyclists Website:
Already, we are seeing so many people rediscovering the joy of getting outside on a bike. Our way of life is changing, and some of those changes are thankfully temporary, but let’s hold onto this embrace of biking and enjoying the outdoors. Let’s use National Bike Month to celebrate what joy we have, the physical and mental health biking brings us, and the humble bicycle that unites us all, even as we must stay apart and at home.
