What Works: Dealing with loss, opening to gain
It seems, this week, so many I know have lost something. Whether it’s a job, health, a relationship, or an expectation, loss is real. It’s emotionally hard. In some cases, it’s a crisis. Loss of a client can hurt or kill a business if a contingency plan isn’t in place. Losing a job or a partner can be life altering. So, how can you recover faster?
Critical Opportunity Theory, my creation you may also know as Crappertunity, isn’t just about recovery. It’s about recognizing where you are right now. What is happening right now? You may be dealing well, moving forward in whatever way you can. Or, you may be under the covers, crying, wondering why life beat you up again.
No matter which way you are going, it's not wrong. It just is. The key is to become aware as soon as possible of where you are. Only then can you see what is possible versus impossible. And, when you see that, you can consciously plan a path forward versus grasping for straws.
Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine some opportunity from downward spiral behaviors. Often, in crisis, we reach for these things because it works. For each of these questions, when you answer them, ask yourself “Why? What is possible, instead?”
What am I denying?
What do I feel not good enough about?
What do I feel too good to do?
What am I avoiding doing?
What am I distracting myself with? (Sex, drugs, alcohol, other projects)
Who am I blaming? (Including myself)
Who do I feel victimized by?
When do I isolate?
When do I complain, gripe, rage, with others?
What do I expect when I do this?
What feels hopeless about this situation?
Where do I feel powerless?
Where am I not taking action?
How am I looking for a miracle?
What is making me press on unnecessarily or resisting change?
Your Critical Opportunity is around the corner. My challenge to you is to reach for awareness of your situation, consciousness of your environment, and humble about the one thing you can control – YOURSELF. You have all the power you need not to “get over” this, but to work through it and come out on the other side with more opportunity, abundance, and happiness than you would have had if you hadn’t faced this in the first place.
Things may seem bad now. I want to encourage you and tell you that disruption doesn’t have to turn into corruption. Your life is in your hands. You have the power to take this situation and turn it into something absolutely amazing. If you want help, you know where to find me. Think it. Say it. Live it! The floor is yours, Carson City.
