Priorities: What’s Hot and What’s Not
Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Sat, 01/25/2020 - 10:28amLast week, I wrote about overwhelm and how to approach it. But, there’s one part of the process of overcoming overwhelm that will trip you up if you don’t understand it - setting priorities.
Priorities fall under a number of categories:
- Critical priority. (Example: Something that has to be done in 24 hours, often has a consequence if not done)
- The deadline is approaching. (Example: Hard deadline, no moving it, often has penalties for missing)

What Works: We are all terrified
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 09/26/2019 - 2:13pmWhat was your reaction to that headline? Was it a silent nodding of the head? Did you bristle — “not me!” Did you analyze? “All of us — really, Diane.” Did you get angry? “What is this clickbait?” No matter your reaction, there are a few universal truths we all deal with differently. Fear is real. Fear manifests in different ways. Fear shows up in all of us at one time or another. Terror is when fear stops us from doing what we want to do.
What Works: Customer Service and Success: Find Ways to Say Yes
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 09/17/2019 - 2:09pmHello Carson City! I’ve been a little out of pocket since Burning Man. I have three sicknesses just pile on: playa lung, a head cold, and I wrapped the whole thing up with bronchitis. Doing life sick was pretty hard. But I found it was made possible by the number of times businesses in this area stepped up and said yes.

Submitted by editor on Tue, 11/06/2018 - 12:47pmDon’t worry. My business column this morning isn’t going to be filled with party politics. But I will ask you an important question about the politics of your company. How do you make decisions in your business?
What Works: Business cycles can be scary
Submitted by editor on Wed, 10/31/2018 - 4:34pmHappy Halloween! I thought I would hold this column for the scariest day of the year because, if you don’t plan alternative communication or business strategies during the low points of your business cycle, you could scare yourself into bad decision making.
What Works: Tired? Choose your energy
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/01/2018 - 12:34pmLast Friday, I was enjoying Open Mic Night at A to Zen and sipping on a cup of tea, when my heart and mind was captured by a ukulele and the voice of Carson City newcomer Kelsey Kelly.
What Works: The power of forgiveness
Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/17/2018 - 2:19pmThis morning on my radio show, I discussed the topic of forgiveness. It’s a tough subject, especially if you have been hurt. However, forgiveness is not for the person or situation being forgiven. It’s for you. And, sometimes, the person or situation isn’t the only thing that needs to be forgiven. You need to forgive yourself as well.
Wednesday in Carson City: Things to do
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Wed, 08/08/2018 - 7:02amWelcome to Wednesday, Carson City. It’s another lazy, hazy day in Northern Nevada. You’ll want to keep your outdoor activities limited when the air is like this, but it understandably leads to a feeling of cabin-fever. Take the family out for dinner tonight at Firehouse Subs on Highway 50; they are raising funds for a local family recovering from a car accident. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival gets into the swing of things with the Echoes Band in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Keep reading for all of today’s happenings.

What Works: Business challenges? Just keep moving!
Submitted by editor on Tue, 08/07/2018 - 11:39amIt’s a funny thing being in the business of helping businesses through challenge. Once a client is through their challenge or transition, our work is done. Clients work with me anywhere from one month to two years. No matter how long I work with a client, there is one requirement I provide right up front. No matter what happens, keep moving.

What Works: The Importance of Business Relationships
Submitted by editor on Wed, 08/01/2018 - 8:12amWhen business owners were asked in a survey what their most precious resource was, the pre-dominant answer was (drumroll please) PEOPLE. Relationships, partnerships, and contracts with people are a businesses’ most precious asset. So, if this is the case, why do with people fall through the cracks?
What Works: Emotional Intelligence and Business

This morning, considering President Trump’s latest tweet to the president of Iran, I found it appropriate that the topic I had prepared for today was emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence, in short, is how you manage yourself and how you interact with others.
Thursday happenings in Carson City and beyond
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 6:12amThere is more hot and smoky in store for the day, including a very real threat of thunderstorms. You may want to stick to indoor activities when the air quality is low like this. The Capital City Community Band has a free concert and ice cream social scheduled for this afternoon at the First United Methodist Church. All are welcome, and it’s hard to argue with ice cream on a day like this. If you are looking to start your own business, but still some legal guidance, you’ll find the ‘Lunch-n-Learn’ workshop at the Adams Hub extremely helpful.
What Works: Communicating? Pick a pony!
Submitted by editor on Tue, 07/17/2018 - 4:05pmBusiness is kind of like a horse race. When you line them up at the starting line, the horses all look good. They are all fast, just some are faster than others. Some of them have better odds than the others. Nevada is a betting state, so I will ask you some betting questions.

Barnum.” The Stewart Indian School in east Carson City has history reaching into the early days of our state.
