Reno Philharmonic Classix 5 welcomes violinist Chloë Hanslip, pays tribute to global music

Internationally renowned violinist Chloë Hanslip brings her extensive repertoire to the Reno Philharmonic Association’s Classix Five. At 24, the British violinist is firmly established on the international stage. Since her BBC debut in 2002, she has performed regularly at major venues in England, Europe, United States and the Far East. The Classix Five concert set is Feb. 15 and 17, 2015 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, in Reno, Nev.
Hanslip’s world music experience complements the Classix Five program that focuses on the global music landscape with a repertoire to include Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, followed by Mohammed Fairouz’ Violin Concerto “Al-Andalus”, as interpreted by Hanslip. “Al-Andalus” is a musical and historical narrative of the modern Arab world. Closing the evening is Dvorak’s tuneful Symphony No. 8 in G major, op. 88, written with the inspiration of his Czech country home.
“When I conducted in Algeria I became fascinated with the haunting beauty of Arabic music,” Laura Jackson, music director for the Reno Philharmonic, said. “Fairouz captures in his concerto the themes and legends I learned about while I was there. I knew that Chloe would be a perfect artist to perform this piece because of her fiery, passionate playing as well as her subtlety and finesse.”
Classix Five performances are Sunday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Pre-concert talks take place with Music Director Laura Jackson Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. and Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. In this preview, Jackson and special guests discuss the works and composers, giving attendees a background and historical context for the music they will hear.
