Silver City Hosts Evening Picnic, Live Music, Storytelling on Saturday
Silver City is inviting the public to a free event in the park on Saturday, August 19th. It's a potluck picnic from 5pm-9 pm with live music and some very special programming as well. Organizers say everyone is welcome.
“Bring your lawn chairs, beverages, a dish to share and a story if you dare! This will be a wonderful evening of community, music, food and stories,” said Evangeline Elston, one of the event organizers.
Location: Located 3 miles from Virginia City, the historic town of Silver City is lies within both the Comstock Historic District and the Virginia City National Historic Landmark. The shaded park and stage are adjacent to the Silver City School House at 385 High Street.
Live music: The picnic will feature live music on the town’s outdoor stage by Wayne Thomas and Trevor Thomas, Robert Elston, members of the Ukelocos, Red Rose, and others.
New Town Podium Dedication: For the last few months, Bruce Douglas and Sue Mark of marksearch.org have been guests of the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, a program established in 2014 that is directed and funded by Theo McCormick and Quest Lakes. Sue and Bruce are “conversation artists” who’ve worked all over the world on a variety of projects.
On Saturday marksearch will present Silver City with a beautiful new podium that Bruce and local Doug Beverly Brown have created for the town, with input from locals. The podium is meant as a tool to inspire and facilitate the ongoing story and history of Silver City as well as the community’s ongoing civic discourse.
Open Mic: Between sets of music, there will also be Silver City Stories Open Mic sessions to christen the new podium. Folks are encouraged to bring a Silver City story they want to tell. (There will be time for three stories per break in music with a duration of about 5 minutes each.) People may sign up to tell their stories at the “Welcome!” table in the park. The mic will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Postcards for Silver City: In addition, attendees can examine the new postcard series marksearch is gifting to the town. The postcards feature photographs and messages Sue has collected during workshops, interviews, and meetings with Silver City folks this summer. Some of the postcards, which celebrate the historic town’s unique sense of community, can also be seen in a display at the local Post Office through August.
Sponsorship: The event is sponsored by Yellow Truck Productions; the Resident Artist Program in Silver City; marksearch; and Evangeline Presents.
