Carson City Library hosts Virtual Program: Hour Of Code

Nepris for Nevada, a collaboration between the Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation and Nevada Department of Education, will feature eleven informational livestream sessions to middle and high schoolers statewide during Nevada Career Week for two weeks beginning Monday, Feb. 13.

I’ve been contemplating possible new ventures to tackle when I retire, small businesses that do not require driving or flying, and I’d like to share them with you here.

I often notice horticulture claims that will supposedly benefit plants as I read the news. Two caught my attention this past week: use baking soda to control leaf and root diseases and coffee grounds to make plants healthy. I wanted to explore the science behind these assertions, so I turned to my favorite urban horticulture researcher and myth debunker, Linda Chalker-Scott. Ph.D., at Washington State University.

On February 9, 2023 at approximately 1524 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the area North of Singing Waters Road on US Highway 50 Alt in Fernley, Nevada for a reported larceny.

A Fernley citizen reported seeing a bobcat tractor that had been stolen from the Nevada Cement Quarry. The citizen confronted the suspect, who punched the reporting party multiple times, starting a physical altercation.

UPDATE: The suspect in Saturday's strong arm robbery is in custody.

The strong arm robbery happened just before 11 a.m. in the area of Mills Park near the community center. The suspect is alleged to have demanded money from a woman near the Carson City Community Center while holding a large rock.

The man was described as either Asian or Hispanic wearing black pants, a black sweatshirt and a grey beanie with visible face tattoos. He demanded money from her and then ran off on foot heading Northbound on Roop.

This week, the senior in the spotlight is Carson High School’s Gracie Walt. She is a strong student, a talented athlete and a dedicated member of the community.

UPDATE Saturday: The Carson City School District issued the following statement regarding the incident:

The Carson City School District has learned that as a result of an investigation into an unrelated matter on Wednesday, Feb. 8, two individuals were arrested for allegedly possessing a firearm on school grounds on Monday, Feb. 6. The District is fully supportive of and cooperating with local law enforcement in their investigation. As ever, the District and the Sheriff’s Office keep the safety and well-being of students as the top priority. We want to assure our families and the community that we continue to be vigilant in our efforts to keep our students, staff and visitors safe.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested two allegedly gang-related students on Wednesday, Feb. 8 for possessing a gun on school grounds.

The students were arrested at their homes following a report from the school district to the sheriff’s office.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford found the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners to have been in violation of Nevada’s Open Meeting Laws (OML) during three meetings in 2021.

The complaint was initially filed by Tony Stephenson on behalf of the Lyon County Democratic Central Committee, who alleged that violations had taken place.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation announced Thursday that with just over $1 billion in the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, unemployment benefit payment reserves are continuing to build toward recommended levels. This is being accomplished without raising employers tax rates, supported by overall low levels of claims being filed.
