Fall is a great time to get out and add to our cottonwood population along the river. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the community to come out and plant young cottonwoods with staff at Carson River Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Seasonal closures apply to many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, and picnic areas.

The event has experienced challenges over the last few years with staffing, crowd and people taking selfies with bears.
Prescribed fire operations to begin at Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting

If conditions and weather are favorable, California State Parks may conduct understory burning over the next three weeks in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may begin burning piles on Angora Ridge near Fallen Leaf Lake. Smoke will be present.

Troubling discovery: Infestation of invasive New Zealand mudsnails found in Lake Tahoe

This is the first time the species has been detected in the Tahoe Basin.

The temperatures are lovely and there hasn’t been a freeze. Last week I was worrying about the way my cucumber and tomato plants looked before I realized that summer gardening was just about over anyway.
Tahoe Yellow Cress surveys underway in the Lake Tahoe Basin

These surveys will continue throughout September across numerous land ownerships, and on every beach where this rare plant is known to occur.
