Northern Nevada backyards and gardens: Spring lawn fertilizing around the corner

Mid-April is a good time to apply lawn fertilizer. The cool season grasses in Northern Nevada generally require two to five pounds of actual nitrogen (N) per 1000 square feet per year. To reduce turf maintenance, you can apply two to three pounds of actual N per 1,000 square feet per year instead. Heavily used lawns may need the higher rate than those that get little traffic.

As I write this on Leap Day, I am waiting for the big blizzard to arrive. The National Weather Service is warning to expect six to 10 feet of snow above 7000 feet and one to two feet here on the west side of Washoe Valley. They are calling for winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts over 75 to 80 mph here in the valley and 115 mph over the Sierra ridges.
