Just after midnight on Tuesday, a man and woman were arrested for allegedly doing whippets (inhaling nitrous oxide to get temporarily “high”) at Mills Park after it was closed for the evening.

According to the arrest report, a 27-year-old Reno man and 25-year-old Carson City woman were arrested after deputies were patrolling in the area and saw a vehicle parked within the park boundaries with its headlights on.

As the reporting deputy pulled in behind the vehicle, they observed the driver, identified as the Reno man, holding a balloon in their hand.

The deputy made contact with the man and woman, and saw a “large nitrous oxide tank in plain view in the center console area.”

According to the report, balloons are commonly used to inhale nitrous oxide, also known as doing whippets.

The man admitted to “taking a few hits” from the whippets, stating it “wears off fast.” While attempting to speak to the woman, they noted she exhibited “signs of extreme impairment including mumbled speech, wide-eyed expression, and delayed responses.”

A cover unit was requested, and deputies removed both individuals from the vehicle. They agreed to speak to deputies, and admitted to using the nitrous oxide. The woman said she’d purchased it and the balloons for them to use.

The two were taken into custody and booked on possession of drug paraphernalia (the balloon) and possession of a chemical for purposes of inhalation.

Bail for each: $2,274
