The National Weather Service is tracking thunderstorms that developed Wednesday afternoon along the Sierra, the larger of them moving in a northeastern direction into western Nevada.

In a special weather statement issued earlier Wednesday, forecasters note the impact of these storms could reach South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Gardnerville, Carson City and Reno, among other places.

Forecasters advise these storms are capable of producing frequent lightning, brief heavy rainfall and small hail, sudden temperature drops, and strong outflow winds to 40 mph through this evening.

The weather service advises that if caught in a thunderstorm, people should seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows. Hikers and campers should seek shelter in a vehicle if possible.
