The 2026 season marks a rare double celebration: the railroad’s 50th anniversary and America’s 250th birthday. A full season of events is planned, with the public invited to join the festivities.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad launches its Golden Anniversary season on May 23, 2026, celebrating 50 years since the historic line was revived along its original 1869 route between Virginia City and Gold Hill. Rebuilt by the Gray family, the railroad resumed service on July 2, 1976 — just in time for the United States Bicentennial.

The 2026 season marks a rare double celebration: the railroad’s 50th anniversary and America’s 250th birthday. A full season of events is planned, with the public invited to join the festivities.

A signature celebration takes place July 3, featuring a 1970s-themed party with music, classic fare like hot dogs and lemonade, and commemorative merchandise. The celebration continues July 4 with a Virginia City parade, fireworks, and a live murder mystery performance aboard the train.

Opening weekend over Memorial Day brings rides to historic Gold Hill alongside live music, food, and family-friendly activities. Festivities throughout Virginia City will include a parade, the Model A Hill Climb, and more.

Trains depart daily from the original Virginia City depot, offering a scenic 35-minute journey along the historic route. Departures run hourly from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October. Fares range from $19 for adults and $10 for children ages 5–12; children four and under ride free. Tickets are available at the depot or online at virginiatruckee.com.

Passengers enjoy sweeping high desert views from open-air cars while hearing stories of the Comstock silver and gold rush. The route passes historic mining sites, travels through the 400-foot Tunnel No. 4, and reaches Gold Hill — the site of the 1859 silver discovery. Wildlife sightings, including wild mustangs and coyotes, are common.

Later in the season, the railroad plans to debut newly restored Steam Engine No. 30. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad was also recently featured in Paramount’s 1923 series, offering visitors the chance to ride in the same historic coaches seen on screen.

Guests can also view the famed locomotive Reno, an 1872 engine and one of the most recognizable trains in film history, with appearances in nearly 100 movies and westerns.

Seasonal favorites return, including murder mystery rides, the Pumpkin Express, Candy Cane Express, and the Train O’ Lights — events that sell out each year.

Before or after your ride, visit the gift shop inside the original 1870 depot for refreshments, souvenirs, and railroad memorabilia. Make a day of it in Virginia City, a historic mining town known for its shops, restaurants, and museums.

The depot and train are also available for private events, including weddings, birthdays, and group celebrations. For tickets, event updates, or bookings, visit www.virginiatruckee.com or call (775) 847-0380.
