The Carson City area experienced the largest year-over-year unemployment decline statewide, falling 1.8 percentage points to give the capital city an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent, according to figures released Tuesday from Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. More good news, Carson City added 200 jobs in March.
Statewide, job numbers increased 2.8 percent over-the-year, adding 34,100 jobs. The Reno/Sparks area unemployment rate is down two tenths of a point over the month, to 6.9 percent, and is down 1.5 percentage points over the year. The unemployment rate in Las Vegas remained at 7.2 percent (not seasonally adjusted) in March, but is down 1.2 percentage points from last year.
All three of Nevada’s population centers gained employment on a year-over-year basis, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Las Vegas experienced the highest nominal growth in March, up 23,600 jobs, an increase of 2.7 percent, relative to March 2014. Reno/Sparks added 5,800 jobs to payrolls (+2.9 percent). Carson City added 200 jobs, up 0.7 percent. Statewide, job numbers increased 2.8 percent over-the-year, adding 34,100 jobs.
“Looking at historical employment trends, evidence of Nevada’s economic recovery is readily apparent, especially in the Las Vegas and Reno metros,” Anderson said. “Also of note, since March 2010, as the recession was bottoming out, the unemployment rate has decreased in every county, signifying the economy is regaining strength.”
