According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, a traffic stop led to a fatal shooting in the area of Robinson and Curry Thursday morning just before 10 a.m.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office issued the following press release relating to today’s shooting.

Carson City, NV – Carson City Deputies were involved in a shooting resulting in the death of the suspect.

At approximately 9:21 a.m. on April 17, 2025, a Carson City Deputy contacted the occupants of a vehicle parked in a casino parking lot in downtown Carson City. 

The initial contact was consensual and did not involve any lawful violations. 

The vehicle was occupied by a female in the driver’s seat and a male in the passenger seat. 

Both people in the vehicle voluntarily provided their identification to the Deputy. 

While the Deputy was verifying the information, a second (Traffic Enforcement) Deputy arrived at the scene to assist.

Deputies were informed by (dispatch) radio that the male occupant was the subject of a Felony Warrant issued out of Arizona. 

As the officers took steps to take him into custody, the suspect fled on foot toward a residential area. 

Both Deputies pursued the suspect on foot to a parking lot about one block away, where he presented with a handgun. 

Shots were fired in the parking lot and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 9:34 a.m.  No other injuries were reported.

The deceased suspect is identified as a 35-year-old white male.  His last known residence was documented in Welton, Yuma County, Arizona. 

The warrant identified the suspect as a Parole Violator from Arizona with an original Aggravated Assault offense. 

The (transient) female identified as the driver of the vehicle was released at the scene by Douglas County Sheriff’s Detectives.         

This incident is being investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.  Both Deputies involved have been placed on a standard Administrative Leave.

Editor’s note: We initially stated the driver of the vehicle was the deceased, but according to new information he was the passenger.

According to additional reports, the incident began with a traffic stop involving two individuals who left the vehicle and ran. The passenger* of the vehicle had a felony warrant for his arrest.

According to the CCSO, the passenger* of the vehicle pulled a gun and held it to his head, and deputies opened fire. It’s not clear if the fatal gunshot was self inflicted or fired by deputies.

This is a developing story. The driver* has been detained.

He said the suspect is reported to be down and deceased at this time.

Furlong said Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) protocol is in place, and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is en route to investigate.
