Carson City, Nev. (April 11, 2025) — The state of Nevada has notified the Carson City School District of a recent Attorney General opinion that school districts must make up instructional time lost due to inclement weather, regardless of how many extra instructional minutes they retain in their average school day. In response, the Carson City School District has announced that it willrepurpose three scheduled early release days, which were scheduled for professional development, to fulfill the requirement. These days (Wednesday, April 23May 14 and May 28) will now be full school days for students.

“Living in northern Nevada, we all have come to expect significant weather conditions that challenge our ability to safely hold school,” said Andrew Feuling, superintendent for Carson City School District. “Each year, we anticipate this and build extra days into our academic school calendar as contingency days in case they are needed. Given the circumstances, and the repurposed early release days, we are pleased to share the end of the school year dates and activities are expected to occur as presently planned.”

The snow day, which occurred on Thursday, February 13, 2025, resulted in the closure of schools across the district, including elementary, middle and high schools. In compliance with state requirements to meet the minimum number of instructional hours, Carson City schools will forgo the last three Early Release Days and hold classes on a regular bell schedule.

“This decision ensures we remain in compliance with state instructional requirements while minimizing disruption to families and staff,” Feuling continued. “We appreciate the flexibility of the Nevada Department of Education, our educators and the understanding of our community as we adjust the calendar.”

Parents and guardians are encouraged to review the updated 2024-2025 Academic School Calendar on the district’s website and contact their child’s school with any questions.
