A 43-year-old man was arrested Friday for suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon after he answered an apartment door while holding a handgun that was observed by an officer following a child custody dispute, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Following an investigation, deputies arrested Tyrome Davis. He was also booked for misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence.

According to the booking report, deputies were called to the 3200 block of Imperial Way for a child custody dispute. Dispatch advised the reporting party (RP) stated there was no custody order in place but the mother of his child won’t let him the child, the report states.

Deputies arrived and met with the RP who advised he was worried the mother of his child wasn’t going to let him see his child this weekend. He stated the mother’s fiancee had threatened him in the past.

A deputy followed behind the RP where he rang the doorbell, which had a camera. The deputy advised dispatch of their location and stood at the entrance of the walkway while the RP stood near the door, according to the report.

A few moments later the deputy heard the door unlock and then open. When the door opened, Davis was standing in the doorway and had a black handgun in his right hand pointed at the ground and then racked the handgun using his left hand. Davis then looked at the deputy and began to close the door while the officer drew their firearm. The deputy ordered Davis to drop the gun and observed him reach his right arm out on the other side of the wall with the door closing, the report states.

The door reopened and Davis began to place himself on the ground, showing the deputy his hands. The deputy observed the firearm was no longer in sight. The deputy ordered the RP and the person he was with to get behind him and to go to the end of the walkway, according to the report.

While Davis was on the ground he said he didn’t know the police were there. When another deputy arrived, Davis was told to stand up and walk backward toward the officer. He was arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon.

Davis told the deputy that the RP had threatened him a week ago over child custody disputes regarding who was going to have custody and win the custody battle and then, when the doorbell rang, he saw the reporting party on the camera, the report states. The deputy learned the child’s mother took the gun out of the safe and handed it to Davis and then he answered the door, not knowing a deputy was there.

The mother gave deputies consent to search her residence and collect the firearm for evidence. Deputies later collected video footage of the doorbell camera. A deputy entered the residence and observed a black handgun behind the TV on the TV stand, the report states. The deputy collected the firearm and pulled out the magazine and pulled the slide back to ensure there was no ammunition in the firearm. When the officer pulled the slide back, a bullet was extracted from the chamber, according to the report.

Deputies took photos and booked the gun and ammunition into evidence. Dispatch advised Davis had conditions through the Department of Alternative Sentencing to obey all laws and to not possess weapons. DAS advised they wanted him placed on hold. He was taken to jail and booked. Bail: $15,000.
