By Joyce Jackson — The Sierra-Tahoe Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) and its Auxiliary of Minden, Nev., have provided support services to our community through donations to various local organizations and facilities throughout the Minden, Gardnerville, Carson City and Dayton areas.
For 10 years, this local veteran’s organization has provided a “Summer BBQ,” Easter Egg Hunt for the families and a monthly delivery of “homemade” baked goods to offer a little taste of home to the Marines after a long day of training. There are 10 ladies that bake regularly and a few that donate occasionally.
The goodies are dropped off to a central locations third Sunday of each month. Bakers do not need to be members of the organization and are always welcomed. If you are interested in more information, please contact Jan at (775) 781-6460.
The Marine Corp Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC) is located in the Pickel Meadows of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, south of Lake Tahoe on 46,000 acres of mountainous terrain. The center was established in 1951 and by 1963 was designated as a Cold Weather Battalion. During the 1980s, the Training Center’s focus was on training and preparing Marines and operational units for deployments.
