Carson High School (CHS) Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Cadet Anna Shane placed third at the regional, NJROTC Area .22 Air Rifle Championships at Lemoore High School in Lemoore, Calif., January 25.

Her accuracy earned her a spot at the Navy’s National Air Rifle Competition in Anniston, Ala., which was held last weekend, Feb. 16-18, 2025.

The Navy’s National Air Rifle Championship brings together the top NJROTC cadets from across the United States. Competitors showcase their marksmanship skills in a high-pressure environment, aiming for national recognition and potential scholarships.

Demonstrating exceptional skill, discipline and precision, Shane scored 506 x4, and 514 x9, placing 123 out of 218 shooters nationally. Shane is the first CHS NJROTC representative from Carson High’s Marksmanship Team to qualify and attend the Navy National Competition in more than 4 years.

“As only a second-year cadet, Shane has plenty of upward mobility in Marksmanship, and we are looking forward to seeing her again, qualify for nationals in the upcoming years,” said Senior Chief Jerry Skirvin, CHS NJROTC Teacher.

Cadet Shane is a second-year shooter at CHS, but she has a long background in marksmanship with the 4H Club, Skirvin continued. Carson High and its NJROTC program have a rich history of excellence, and Cadet’s Shane’s success highlights the program’s commitment to developing leadership, discipline and marksmanship skills among its cadets.

In addition to her marksmanship skills, Shane was also a member of the Carson High School’s Girls Cross Country Team that won their second straight Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) 5A Team State Title in November 2023.
