The Carson City Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) proudly recognizes the invaluable contributions of its Uniformed Reserves—an exceptional group of volunteers dedicated to enhancing community safety and supporting law enforcement efforts.

The primary mission of the Reserve Deputy Sheriff program is to supplement law enforcement functions, ensuring the citizens of Carson City receive the highest level of service. Reserve Deputy Sheriffs, while on duty, are regarded equally in authority and responsibility to full-time deputies. They are held to the same rigorous standards and expectations.

This program consists of community members who volunteer their time and energy to fulfill many roles alongside full-time Deputy Sheriffs. Carson City Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy Sheriffs undergo the same hiring process as full-time deputies.

“Our Reserve Deputies represent one of the strongest examples of community policing, and offer the organization with operational response capabilities that might not otherwise be available,” said Sheriff Ken Furlong. “From staffing special events to augmenting operational activities, each of the Reserve Deputies carries with them the very same annual training and certifications that do our paid staff.

This training and certification recognition are essential when understanding that unlike our paid staff, our Reserves have other jobs and occupations that require just as much focus as being a law enforcement officer in the State of Nevada.  We our thankful for our community response capabilities that come directly from our Reserves and support from their families.”

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Uniformed Reserves perform a variety of essential functions, including:

  • Patrol Support: Jail and Detention Support
  • Student Resource Officer Support: Sporting Events
  • Traffic Control: Managing road closures and traffic during events and emergencies.
  • Special Events: Supporting community events, fairs, and parades to ensure safety and order.
  • Community Engagement: Participating in outreach programs to foster positive relationships    between the community and law enforcement.
  • Emergency Response: Assistance provided during natural disasters and public safety crises.
  • Training: A Reserve Deputy Sheriff is a sworn law enforcement officer for Carson City and must meet all Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements.

The CCSO Reserves also engage in various community-focused activities, including:

– Boat Patrol on Lake Tahoe
– Lake Tahoe Beach Patrol
– Prescription Drug Takeback Initiatives
– Carson High School Graduation and Safe Grad Night
– Trick or Treat at the Governor’s Mansion
– Nevada Day Parade
– Silver and Snowflake Festival
– DUI Checkpoints
– Crime Scene Security
– Inmate Transport
– Annual CCSO Santa Visits (over 40 years of tradition)

2025 Volunteer Contributions

In 2025, the CCSO Uniformed Reserves collectively volunteered an impressive 2,500 hours. This dedication not only reflects their commitment to public service but also translates to significant cost savings for the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

– Salary Cost Savings: Estimated at $100,000 in avoided personnel costs, enabling the Sheriff’s Office to allocate resources to other critical areas of public safety.

(Reserve Deputy Karl Barber) “I wanted to participate in community service that was meaningful, challenging and provided an opportunity for comradery. The range of experiences is challenging, fulfilling and a meaningful way to contribute to the safety and well-being of our community while supporting the full-time law enforcement officers in their duties.”
